Surgery is an integral part in the treatment of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), timely surgery is necessary for the patients with indications and can reduce the risk of complications after the operation. Evading surgery by overemphasizing the importance of drug therapy and prolonging its use can not maximize the efficacy of medical treatment, but miss the optimal time for surgical treatment and increase the risk of operation. It is already confirmed that ineffective medical treatment, corticosteroid use, malnutrition and intra-abdominal infection are risk factors of complications of surgery and should be avoided, emergency operation and operation at active stage of IBD also increase the susceptibility of complications of surgery. Gastroenterologists are responsible for the judgment of timing of surgery and improving the background for performing surgical procedure.
