This paper studies powders of Gd3Ga3Al2O12:Ce, a promising scintillator composition, as a possible object for express pre-characterization of scintillation kinetics and level of persistent luminescence. Garnet phase powders with uniform microstructure, consisting of 1-2 μm grains, were obtained by co-precipitation approach. It was shown, that both scintillation decay time and presence of persistent luminescence are influenced by both powder thermal treatment temperature and strong Ga deficit. © Published under licence by IOP Publishing Ltd.

Two newly synthesized H+-selective ionophores: 2,3,4-tris(dodecyloxy)benzyldihexylamine and benzyldioctadecylamine, and six nitro-group containing solvents (2-nitrophenyl octyl ether, 2-nitrophenyl pentyl ether, 2-nitrophenyl phenyl ether, 1,2-dimethyl-3-nitrobenzene, 2-fluorophenyl 2-nitrophenyl ether, benzyl 2-nitrophenyl ether) were investigated to develop a membrane for glass-capillary H+-selective microelectrode with optimized measuring range for corrosion studies. It was shown that the microelectrode based on benzyldioctadecylamine and potassium tetrakis(4-chlorophenyl) borate as anionic site dissolved in 2-nitrophenyl octyl ether possessed the best working pH range (2.6-12.3), Nernstian slope (55.0 mV decade-1) and good time-related characteristics (potential drift 0.06 mV h-1, potential reproducibility ±0.1 mV and response time). It was successfully applied for pH measurements over corroding cut-edge samples of metallic coated steel using scanning ion-selective electrode technique. © 2014 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

New sodium and chloride ion-selective membrane cocktails for glass-capillary microelectrodes were developed satisfying the demands for corrosion studies. Membrane cocktails were optimized to provide a wide pH working range, good long-term stability and reproducibility of potential. The proposed sodium-selective cocktail contains sodium ionophore VI, potassium tetrakis(4-chlorophenyl) borate and 2-nitrophenyl octyl ether. The chloride-selective cocktail consists of tridodecylmethylammonium chloride and 2-nitrophenyl octyl ether. The proposed microelectrodes were successfully applied to measure the concentration of Cl- and Na+ over corroding cut-edge samples of metallic coated steel and can be recommended for measuring the distribution of Na+ and Cl- in corrosion applications. © 2013 Elsevier B.V. The results of formation of the high density effective scintillation ceramics consisting of two compounds of the cubic symmetry, LuAG:Ce and Lu2O3 (LuAG:Ce + Lu2O3), are described. Powders of a novel material LuAG:Ce + Lu2O3 were synthesized by co-precipitation method. The introduction of Lu2O3 into LuAG:Ce was shown to increase the density of the ceramics obtained and modify its scintillation properties. © 2015 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

The crystal structure and spectral luminescent properties of composite phosphors Lu3Al5O12:Ce3+ + Lu 2O3 synthesised by colloid chemical approach have been studied by means of X-ray and neutron powder diffraction and optical spectroscopy methods. The formation of stable defect structures on the phase boundary between Lu3Al5O12:Ce3+ and Lu2O3 evidenced. A redistribution of optically active Ce3+ ions between initial Lu3Al5O12 and lutetium oxide Lu2O3 phase occurs during the colloid chemical synthesis, resulting in suppression of luminescence intensity. The modification of luminescent properties by Lu2O3 doping in Lu3Al5O12:Ce3+ + Lu 2O3 is drastically different in comparison with Y 3Al5O12:Ce3+ + Lu2O 3. The chemical and structural mechanisms of Lu2O 3 doping effects on luminescence properties of lutetium and yttrium garnet-based compounds are discussed. © 2014 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Cu(II) complexes with 5-tert-butyl-3-(pyrrolidine-1-ilmethyl)-1,2- dihydroxybenzene (i), 5-tert-butyl-3-(piperidine-1-ilmethyl)-1,2- dihydroxybenzene (ii), 5-tert-butyl-3-(aze none-1-ilmethyl)-1,2-dihydroxybenzene (iii), 5-tert-butyl-3-(morpholine-1-ilmethyl)-1,2-dihydroxybenzene (iV), and 5-tert-butyl-3-(methylpiperazine-1-ilmethyl)-1,2-dihydroxybenzene (V) have been synthesized and characterized by means of elemental analysis, TG/DTA, FT-IR, ESR, UV-Vis spectroscopy and conductivity measurements. According to the data obtained, the compounds I-V coordinate in their singly deprotonated forms in an O,N-bidentate fashion. The synthesized complexes have the composition described by the general formula CuL2 and are characterized by square planar geometry of their coordination cores CuO2N2. The Cu(II) complexes have been screened for their antimicrobial activity on different species of pathogenic bacteria, fungi, and their antimicrobial potency has been discussed. A high antibacterial activity against Mycobacterium smegmatis and Pseudomonas aeruginosa has been found for the Cu(II) complexes synthesized. © Lietuvos mokslu̧ akademija, 2012.

Ultrablack films produced by etching electrodeposited Ni–P (5.5 at% P) coatings in an oxidizing medium were studied by infrared spectroscopy. It was shown that nickel phosphates and pyrophosphates of different compositions in addition to nickel oxide were the main fi lm components. © 2014, Springer Science+Business Media New York.
