This paper presents the results of tests performed to study the effect of slurry solids concentration on the behavior of gas dispersion in industrial-scale mechanical flotation cells. The experiments were conducted at five concentrator facilities run by a Mexican mining company, specifically in the rougher bank of the lead/zinc flotation circuits. Those mechanical cells having significant contribution to the performance of the circuit, that is, the cells that enable high recovery, were characterized. The measurement protocol enables measurement of the superficial gas velocity, gas holdup and bubble size, and sampling of the mineral slurry. The measured data indicate that bubble size and gas holdup decreases as the concentration of solids increases.

The co-digestion of substrates is a feasible alternative to increase the production of biogas in wastewater treatment plants (WWTP). This method aims to correct the imbalance between nutrients, to increase the concentration of organic matter in the digester and to dilute potential inhibitors what would improve the biogas production. The objectives of the study, conducted at the WWTP Pobla de Farnals, were the identification and characterization of potential co-substrates in the area, the determination of the maximum biogas yield of these co-substrates and the formulation of the appropriate mixture. Previous to the introduction of the chosen substrate in the digester a simulation in a pilot plant was conducted.

Synthesis of 3,4-diferrocenyltoluene (7), 1-morpholino- and 1-piperidino-2,3- diferrocenylbicyclo[3.1.0]hex-2-enes 8a, 8b, 1-morpholino- and 1-piperidino-7-ferrocenyl- 3,4-ferrocenobicyclo[3.2.1]oct-6-enes 9a, 9b, 2- and 3-amino(diferrocenyl)-hexa-1,3,5- trienes 10a,b, 11a,b by reactions of amino(diferrocenyl)cyclopropenylium tetrafluoroborates with 1-methylprop-2- enylmagnesium chloride at 80 °C is described. The structures of the compounds obtained were determined by IR, 1H- and 13C-NMR spectroscopy and mass spectrometry. X-ray diffraction data for 1-piperidino-7-ferrocenyl-3,4-ferrocenobicyclo[ 3.2.1]oct-6-ene (9b), 2-morpholino- and 2-piperidino-1,3-diferrocenyl-4-methylhexa- 1,3,5-trienes 10a and 10b is presented. The electrochemical behaviour of compounds 7, 8a, 10a and 10b was investigated by means of cyclic voltammetry and square wave voltammetry. For 7 and 8a two electrochemical processes (I-II), attributed to the oxidation of the ferrocene moieties were found. On the other hand for compounds 10a and 10b a single electron transfer for both ferrocene groups and the electrochemical generation of the monocation and dication species were detected. © 2011 by the authors; licensee MDPI, Basel, Switzerland.

Calophyllum brasiliense Cambess (Calophyllaceae) is a tree species distributed in Argentina in the edges of matting and hygrophilous forests of the Paraná River. Those of the riverbank have been strongly fragmented due to the increment of the flood levels caused by the Yacyreta dam, thus, this populations are at risk of being locally extinguished as a consequence of their drastic size reduction. Fragmentation can affect plant species reducing the amount or the quality of seeds produced or both. The ecological, medicinal, economic and social value of the species and the status of their populations have generated interest in its preservation. One of the strategies implemented was the storage of its seeds, which are recalcitrant. The aims of this study were to evaluate three populations with respect to their potentiality to produce seeds capable of generating individuals, and evaluate the physiological quality regarding the harvest time and the length of the storage period under four methods. The Puerto Valle population produced seeds of good quality which conserved the viability for thirty-one weeks when they were stored with endocarp, in glass bottles.

This paper reports the results of industrial test work performed in flotation columns of seven concentrators of Peñoles Group (México) on the relationship between gas dispersion parameters, namely gas rate (J g between 0?5 and 3?5 cm s 21), gas hold-up (eg between 3?3 and 19?4%), average bubble size (d 32 between 1?30 and 2?9 mm) and bubble surface area flux (S b between 14 and 85 s 21), and the metallurgical performance of the columns (e.g. grade and recovery). Fifteen columns performing in the cleaning stages of lead and zinc circuits were examined. The results obtained show that the behaviour of dispersion parameters is consistent and that both Sb and e g correlate well with recovery and enrichment ratio c/f. © 2012 Canadian Institute of Mining, Metallurgy and Petroleum.

This work presents the electrochemical characterization of Cu(NO3)2•2.5H2O, [Cu(pdto)H2O](PF6)2 and superoxide ion in DMSO. The electrochemical processes Cu(II) + 2e → Cu(0), [Cu(pdto)(H2O)]2+ + 1e → [Cu(pdto)]+, [Cu(pdto)]+ + 1e → Cu(0), O2 •- ↔ O2 + 1e-, and O2 •- + 1e + H+ → OOH- were identified. The electrochemical response of a mixture of the complex [Cu(pdto)(H2O)]2+ with superoxide was studied and, according to this result, it was possible to establish a simple methodology that indicates if a compound presents a superoxide dismutase (SOD)-like mechanism. © 2013, Sociedad Química de México.

One of the commonly used models to estimate the bubble size in flotation columns is the drift-flux model, initially proposed by Wallis in 1962, which estimates the bubble size based on experimental measurements of gas velocity Jg, gas hold-up εg and pulp downward velocity J sl. The model has been considered as an alternative to estimate the average bubble size d32 in flotation cells and columns, when this cannot be measured experimentally, which is usually the case. However, the model has been validated only at laboratory and pilot scale. This paper presents the results of an extensive experimental programme to test the model conducted at the industrial scale. The test programme involved measuring the gas dispersion parameters (Jg, εg and d32) in flotation columns at five concentrators. The data collected were used to estimate the average bubble size using the drift-flux model. A good correlation was found between the bubble size estimated with the model and measured experimentally.

The mass transport in the rotating cylinder electrode (RCE) for the Zn(II) recovery from dilute solutions was investigated. Global mass transport data were obtained by monitoring the (first order) concentration decay of dissolved zinc in sulfate media at pH 2. The electrolyses were performed at holding potential of -1.7 V vs. sat. MSE at Reynolds numbers comprised between 15 470 ≤ Re ≤ 123 680. Based on the analysis of Sh = aRebSc0.356 correlation, the value of the constant a, associated with shape and cell dimensions, was 0.65; while the constant b, associated with hydrodynamic regime, exhibits a value of 0.48, which obeys to smooth zinc deposits on RCE interface. The mass transport in the Zn(II)/Zn cathode interface process differs with other deposition process, which usually gives roughness deposits. © 2010 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
