Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, or RPI, is a private research university located in Troy, New York, with two additional campuses in Hartford and Groton, Connecticut. It was founded in 1824 by Stephen van Rensselaer and Amos Eaton for the "application of science to the common purposes of life" and is the oldest technological university in the English-speaking world. Built on a hillside, RPI's 275-acre campus overlooks the city of Troy and the Hudson River and is a blend of traditional and modern architecture. The institute operates an on‑campus business incubator and the 1,250-acre Rensselaer Technology Park. Numerous American colleges or departments of applied science were modeled after Rensselaer. The university is one among a small group of polytechnic universities in the United States which tend to be primarily devoted to the instruction of technical arts and applied science.Rensselaer is organized into six main schools within which there are thirty-seven departments: the School of Architecture; School of Engineering; School of Humanities, Arts, and Social science; School of Information Technology and Web Science; School of Science; and the Lally School of Management & Technology. The present invention provides methods and compositions for the remote control of cell function based on the use of a magnetic field to excite paramagnetic nanoparticles targeted to specific cell types. The cell type of interest expresses an ion channel wherein excitation of the paramagnetic nanoparticles results in a physical change that is transduced into a cellular response. Such cellular responses may include, for example, increases in gene expression resulting in production of one or more physiologically active proteins. The expression of such proteins can be used to treat a variety of different inherited or acquired diseases or disorders in a subject.

A system is provided having: a system for inputting binaural audio; and a binaural signal analyzer (BICAM) that: performs autocorrelation on both the first channel and second channel to generate a pair of autocorrelation functions; performs a first layer cross-correlation between the first channel and second channel to generate a first layer cross-correlation function; removes the center peak from the first layer cross-correlation function and a selected autocorrelation function to create a modified pair; performs a second layer cross-correlation between the modified pair to determine a temporal mismatch; generates a resulting function by replacing the first layer cross correlation function with the selected autocorrelation function using the temporal mismatch; and utilizes the resulting function to determine ITD parameters and interaural level difference ILD parameters of the direct sound components and reflected sound components.

A lithium-based energy storage system includes an electrolyte and an electrode. The electrode has a conformal coating of parylene. The parylene forms an artificial solid electrolyte interface (SEI). The electrode may include a material chosen from silicon, graphene-silicon composite, carbon-sulfur, and lithium. The use of parylene to form a conformal coating on an electrode in a lithium-based energy storage system is also disclosed.

The methods include, for instance: providing a substrate, the substrate including at least one trench extending into the substrate from an upper surface thereof; and epitaxially forming a radiation-responsive semiconductor material layer from one or more sidewalls of the at least one trench of the substrate, the radiation-responsive semiconductor material layer responding to incident radiation by generating charge carriers therein. In one embodiment, the sidewalls of the at least one trench of the substrate include a (111) surface of the substrate, which facilitates epitaxially forming the radiation-responsive semiconductor material layer. In another embodiment, the radiation-responsive semiconductor material layer includes hexagonal boron nitride, and the epitaxially forming includes providing the hexagonal boron nitride with an a-axis aligned parallel to the sidewalls of the trench.

The present disclosure relates to a matrix-free polymer nanocomposite. The matrix-free polymer nanocomposite includes a plurality of polymer brush grafted nanoparticles, which form the nanocomposite in the absence of a polymeric matrix. The polymer brush grafted to the nanoparticles comprises a multimodal brush configuration having at least two different populations of polymer ligands of different lengths. The present disclosure also relates to an optic or optoelectronic component comprising a matrix-free polymer nanocomposite as described herein. The present disclosure further relates to a method of making a matrix-free polymer nanocomposite.


Methods and apparatus for transmitting power and data along a metal pipe using wideband acoustic waves. Arrangements use shear-horizontal waves, transmitting narrowband signals for power applications and wideband signals for communications having a bandwidth greater than the coherence bandwidth of the acoustic-electric channel. Chirp wave signals, direct sequence spread signals, and on-off keying are used. Acoustic-electric channels include wedges fixed to a pipe or other substrate, transducers fixed to the wedges, and electronics linked to each transducer for sending and receiving power and signals. Matching networks, rectification circuits, and non coherent signal reception methods may be used.
