In order to efficiently execute neutron beam experiments at JRR-3, the number of beam ports was increased and neutron beam instruments were rearranged in the C2 cold neutron beam line by using a newly developed compact vertical splitting system. Considering the space available for instruments at the downstream region of the cold neutron beam line, the deflection angles of the compact vertical splitting system were set as 10° and 20°. To branch off the cold neutron beam, a bender with characteristic wavelength of 4 Å was developed using Ni/Ti supermirrors coated on both sides of 0.2-mm-thickness silicon substrates. The channel width of the bender is 0.2 mm. The radius of curvature of the compact bender is 938 mm and the lengths of the benders are 160mm and 320 mm, yielding deflection angles of 10° and 20°, respectively. Neutron flux at the end of the neutron guide installed at the bender exit, the deflection angle of which is 20°, was measured to be 1.58 x107 n·cm-2·s-1 with a gold foil activation method. In order to optimize fuel utilization in TRR, the method of fuel management is modified using MCNP-4C code system. An important parameter of fuel management is the uniformity of neutron flux distribution in the core region, which is obtained efficiently in the present strategy. This strategy is based on calculation of position factors and power densities utilizing MCNP simulations. This study shows that the core life time and average extracted burn up of spent fuel elements of TRR are improved significantly. © 2010 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

The MCNP4c code, based on the probabilistic approach, was used to simulate 3D configuration of the core of the heavy water zero power reactor (HWZPR). In present work, first, all of the constituents of the core such as fuel pellets, fuel element, moderator (D2O) and annular graphite reflector were modeled using MCNP4c code. Then calculations of axial and radial neutron fluxes were performed in three energy groups such as thermal (0-0.625 eV), epithermal (0.625-550 eV), and fast (0.550-20 MeV). The cadmium ratio was calculated as well and the neutron flux parameters such as extrapolated height (H e), extrapolated radius (Re) and physical center of the core (z0) were computed using cadmium ratio. Comparison of the neutron flux parameters with the experimental data showed that the MCNP4c model of the HWZPR was validated. © 2011 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

MTR fuel is one of the most used fuel types in research reactors. Loading high positive excess reactivity enables a research reactor to be in service for an extended period of time without refueling. This in turn ends up to asymmetric burn up distribution in axial direction. Minor modifications in present standard fuel assembly design allow use of each fuel assembly in dual directions along vertical axis. Thus, a smoother axial burn up distribution can be achieved. Detailed calculations showed a real improvement in neutron economy and extra positive reactivity is gained. © 2010 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
