Propagation of solid flame along a wire rolled in spiral was explored theoretically. Besides conductive heat transfer along the wire, a contribution from relay-race heat exchange between neighboring spiral loops was taken into account. Combustion of spiral was found to occur in a mode of pseudo-conductive or pseudo-spinning combustion. In the former case, the temperature profile of combustion was close to that in a straight wire. A contribution from relay-race heat transfer between spiral loops can be taken into account as an elevated thermal diffusivity of wire. A specific feature of pseudo-spinning combustion is the formation of a hot spot with a temperature exceeding the thermodynamic combustion temperature. Variation in a pitch and length of spiral loop can be readily used to regulate the temperature and burning velocity of spiral combustion. © 2017, Allerton Press, Inc.

The size effect is especially significant in the electrophysical properties of crystals, including the effect of dispersed powders on the properties of polar liquids contacting with them. The determining role of the kinetic mechanism in the temperature dependence of reaction rates is demonstrated. New evidence is presented to prove that the branched chain nature of gas combustion at low pressures and under isothermal conditions, discovered by N.N. Semenov, persists in combustion processes at elevated pressures under any temperature and macrokinetic conditions. It is noted that the temperature dependence of the rate constants of bimolecular reactions weakens with an increasing activation energy. © 2015 Pleiades Publishing, Ltd.

Various forms of boron nitride, including amorphous α-BN, hexagonal h-BN, turbostratic t-BN, rhombohedral r-BN, explosion-generated E-BN, wurtzitic w-BN and cubic c-BN, and their transformations under shock compression, ball-milling, heating, electron-beam or laser irradiation are discussed, focusing especially on the E-phase formation by different methods, and properties and structural models of this phase. Stationary regimes of active systems-those in which dissipation is compensated by pumping-are considered. Approaching the bifurcation point of such a regime leads to an increase in susceptibility, with soft modes making the dominant contribution. Weak noise, which is inherent to any real system, increases. Sufficiently close to bifurcation, the amplitude of random pulsations is comparable to the average value of the fluctuating quantity, as in the case of developed turbulence. The spectrum of critical pulsations is independent of the original noise. Numerical simulation of the neighborhood of a bifurcation point is considered unreliable because of the poor reproducibility of results. Due to the high susceptibility, calculation roundings result in 'chaotic' jumps of the solution in response to a smooth change in the parameters. It is therefore necessary in the simulation process to introduce a small random function of time, white noise. The solutions of the Langevin equations obtained in this way should be processed statistically. Their properties (except for the intensity of pulsations) are independent of the noise induced. Results of the studies show that the occurrence of chain avalanches is a necessary condition of gasphase processes of combustion not only at pressures tens of times lower than atmospheric pressure, as was thought earlier, but at almost any higher pressures in any temperature regime. It is concluded that considering the specifics of nonisothermal chain processes over a broad range of pressures allows us to explain and adequately describe observed features of combustion, explosion, and detonation (including some that were unexplained earlier). New laws important in theory and practice are predicted and revealed. © 2014 Pleiades Publishing, Ltd.
