This review is intended to generalize and systematize available information on the synthesis of imidazo[1,5-a]- and imidazo[1,2-a]quinoxalines. Relevant studies published in the last 10 - 15 years, as well as earlier studies less familiar to the broad chemical community, are surveyed. Major methods of formation of the imidazoquinoxaline system from substituted quinoxalines and imidazoles according to the type of bond being formed are presented. Special focus is placed on the radically new methods that enable the synthesis of various derivatives of these heterocyclic systems from available and inexpensive reagents. The mechanisms of formation of these compounds are discussed. Information on the biological activity of imidazo[1,5-a]- and imidazo[1,2-a]quinoxalines and examples of pharmaceuticals based on them are reported. © 2014 Russian Academy of Sciences and Turpion Ltd.

This is the first review describing all the quinoxaline-benzimidazole rearrangements as a whole and the new quinoxalinone-benzimidazol(on)e rearrangements in particular when exposed to nucleophilic rearrangements for the synthesis of various biheterocyclic motifs. The scope of the rearrangements is illustrated by way of numerous examples of their application, and in doing so, the review contains over 131 references and covers all of the literature, from the first report of the rearrangement of 2,3-diphenylquinoxaline by Ogg and Bergstrom in 1931 up to more recent examples in the past few years. The mechanisms for the selected transformations are also discussed. © 2016 The Royal Society of Chemistry.

In the second part of this two-part review (for Part 1 see V.A. Mamedov, A. Nataliya, N.A. Zhukova, Prog. Heterocycl. Chem. 2012, 24, 55), recent advances in the synthesis of quinoxalines are reviewed. Syntheses that start from pyrazine fragments and from benzenoid units are discussed. The review covers quinoxaline synthesis starting from anilines and derivatives of anilines, from nitroarenes, from other heterocycles, including benzimidazoles, benzodiazepines, and from fragments that contain neither a pyrazine ring nor a benzene ring, for example, epoxides and azirines, pyrrolidin-3-ones and piperidin-3-ones, γ-butyrolactones, pyran-2,3-diones, and 4-hydroxythiazolidines, amongst others. © 2013 Elsevier Ltd.

Data on fluoroalkylation and perfluoroalkylation methods in organic synthesis are analyzed, summarized and described systematically. The most practically important properties of compounds with fluoroalkyl substituents are illustrated. The key trends and the potential of this field of organic chemistry are considered. Electrochemical syntheses of perfluoroalkyl derivatives that are inaccessible or experimentally difficult to prepare by regular chemical techniques are presented. Particular attention is paid to processes involving organometallic compounds as well as to prospects for the development of this field of research. Possible stable structures of various 2,2′-bipyridine (bpy) and 1,10-phenanthroline (phen) complexes, [Ni(bpy)3]2+, [Co(bpy)3]2+, [Fe(bpy)3]2+ and Fe(phen)2(NCS)2, were optimized for different spin states of the metals, and the spectra computed for every form were compared with the experimental IR spectra of the compounds. It is demonstrated that the changes in spin states of the metals influence both geometry and vibrational spectra of the complexes. Spectral changes are predicted not only in the low frequency range, corresponding to metal-ligand vibrations, but also in the mid-IR range, where ligand vibrations are active. Detailed computational analysis in combination with the corresponding spectroscopic experiment shows that the spectral changes are of a similar character for complexes with the same ligands independent on the central metal and can be used as spectroscopic markers of the electronic state of the latter. Found spectral markers have been validated at a number of complexes of Fe(ii), Ni(ii), Co(ii), Zn(ii) and Cu(ii) with bpy and phen ligands. © The Royal Society of Chemistry 2013.

Pyrimidinophanes are macrocycles consisting of pyrimidine moieties bridged to each other with alkyl spacers. Most of the known pyrimidinophanes originate from pyrimidinic nucleobase uracil and its 5(6)-substituted derivatives.
