High performance production under challenging geological conditions is a product of several parameters. Main factors are the technical equipment and the knowledge in processing. The design and the support system of maingates must also be taken into consideration. The extraction of seams in German underground hard coal mines of RAG in a range of heights between approximately 1.1 and 4.0 m (4 and 13 ft) is done by plow and shearer technology. A complete system for quality management of production is required. The process examination of processes begins with procurement of the equipment. Education and training of the engineers and specialists, as well as for the miners are requirements for success as well. This report gives an overview of RAG measures for achieving high performance. Starting with examination of the processes accompanying procurement of equipment, the following important elements are described. Standards in education and training, technical design and elements of automated processing using state-of-the-art in control systems are critical to this system. The application of automation plays a decisive role in modern coal mines. The latest development in German coal mines is the fully-automated shearer system for longwalls. This helps to enhance safety, particularly in difficult ground conditions, by removing the shearer and shield operators from the immediate mining activity. Source

Seit über 30 Jahren wird in Deutschland Steinkohle in Teufen von mehr als 1.000 m abgebaut; heute liegen die Abbaubetriebe in Teufen bis zu 1.600 m. Mit zunehmender Teufe und höherer Betriebspunktförderung wurden die technischen Systeme kontinuierlich weiterentwickelt und umfangreiche Erfahrungen gesammelt. Länder wie Russland, Ukraine, China oder Tschechien, in denen der Steinkohlentiefbau in vergleichbare Teufen vorstößt, können dabei von dem in Deutschland erarbeiteten Know-how profitieren. The article presents current and future developments in German mine control room technology and discusses the needs of the international market. It focuses on data collection in the production areas, information treatment and visualisation and the creation of a decision making basis for employees and management. At a time when operating costs and performance levels are coming under increasing pressure it is crucially important to achieve a sustained improvement in occupational safety, transparency and efficiency and to have in place a uniform reporting system for the different organisational levels. The development of an integrated software system that uses modern software architectures, but at the same time can be installed on a modular basis, is the key to achieving these objectives. Today's control room technology must also include user-friendly applications that are easy to understand and provide support for the workforce above and below ground. In German coal mining, comprehensive experience is available in the grading of geological faults. The available experience has produced a level of expertise which enables the maintenance of high production figures even under difficult conditions. This is demonstrated by the many successful projects of RAG. West colliery has seen a continuous increase in working depths over the last ten years. With ever deeper mine workings and the accompanying rise in rock pressure levels, combined with the higher excavation ratio, strata control measures at the coal face and in the underground roadways have now assumed critical importance. Sophisticated support profiles have been used in combination with innovative rockbolting technology in order to ensure that performance levels are maintained. These geomechanical stresses are expected to be particularly pronounced in working district 1 WN in Girondelle seam number 5 at West colliery. Extraction panels 630 and 632 in district 1 WN are at a depth of about 1,300 m and both panels, which are being worked simultaneously, are separated by a 220 m-wide pillar (Fig. 1).
