The results of an analysis of the processes occurring at the sliding contact between the brush and contact ring of generators are presented. It is shown that arc and spark discharges are one of the main causes of increased wear on brushes and rings. It is established that arc discharges occur when there are breaks in the brush current circuit while spark discharges occur due to overvoltages in the rotor winding circuit. © 2011 Springer Science+Business Media, Inc.

The main properties of asynchronized compensators, including those with a flywheel on the shaft, are considered. Areas of application of electrical-machine flywheel energy stores are suggested. It is shown that asynchronized compensators with a long-term/short-term power ratio of 100/200 MW and a power exchange time of 15-30 sec can be used in power systems as a second-mobilization power standby to improve the quality of frequency regulation. © 2011 Springer Science + Business Media, Inc.

The excitation regulation system of the ASK-100-4 asynchronous compensator is described. The main modes of operation of the compensators in the Beskudnikovo substation of the "Mosénergo" JSC are considered. This paper presents a real time (RT) model of an electric power system (EPS) and simulator wizard for a grid company's top management dispatcher in EPS and power pools. The problem of constructing an RT dynamic model of a large power system is being solved, using as initial data the result of solution of the state estimation (SE) problem and the data of an operating information complex (SCADA). The simulator wizard implements the dispatcher assistant on the basis of dispatcher instructions.

Dispersed generation implies such allocation of low-power stations at which they are connected to energy consumption nods. This allows to reduce the currents in distribution network, which provides significant economic benefits at the growth of energy consumption. The report draws attention to the following aspects of abnormal and emergency operating modes of the generation units: potential damage of the unit under close external short circuit; disconnections of gas-turbine units with free power turbine while nominal load dropping; inefficient work of the unit during standalone mode.

It is shown how a computer-aided maintenance scheduling system can be used to coordinate maintenance of high-voltage transmission lines and outages of NPP units. It is shown that, for standard tests of the windings of electrical machines subjected to the action of a test voltage, the insulation of the frontal parts and frontal windings inside the phases, and also the positions where the lead rods are connected to the busbars and the winding retaining rings, in practice are not subjected to the action of the test voltage. Moreover, when testing the insulation of the windings with a test voltage, charring of the breakdown channel with destructive lamination of the dielectric barrier of the insulation and the penetration of soot particles along the layers formed occurs. These drawbacks will be completely eliminated by using the KVIS-40 equipment, which enables nondestructive testing of the insulation to be effectively carried out using an increased rectified voltage. © 2012 Springer Science + Business Media, Inc.

Today in Russia there is in use a set of methods for assessing climatic loads for overhead transmission lines (OHL) based on data of climatic conditions. Gathering of climatic conditions data (hydrometeorological information) has been processed within the meteorological stations network that covers all the territory of the Russian Federation. These methods allow regional climatic maps creation, climatic loads assessment (including climatic loads having different return period) as well as providing the possibility to take into account transmission line length during calculation of design climatic loads.

It is shown that the betel resistor shunting equipment enables the nominal disconnection current of the VVN series air-blast circuit breakers, operating at a voltage of 110 - 330 kV and a current of up to 31.5 kA, to be increased. The upgraded circuit breakers satisfy the requirements of the Russian Federation standards. Values of the resistance of the resistors and methods of mounting them are presented, and also measures which must be taken to upgrade all types of circuit breakers. © 2012 Springer Science+Business Media, Inc.
