The landscape industry has proven to be one of the largest high value market segments for compost. Compost is popular among landscapers because of its versatility and efficacy in a variety of applications. A major trend noted is that water shortages have become a major issue in many parts of the country, and water use restrictions are much more common today. Obviously, compost can be promoted as a means to reduce irrigation on landscapes. Ecofriendly landscaping is another trend highlighted, including establishment of green roofs, environmental lawn care companies, and development of LEED-certified homes and buildings and compost can be used in all of the applications. Because landscaping is such a seasonal business, establishing a dependable delivery infrastructure is required. Further, the seasonality of the landscaping industry necessitates that composters time their own sales and marketing activities around the landscapers' schedule.

Some of the basics of compost registration and labeling are reviewed. If compost is sold in states with a fertilizer or soil amendment law, and related claims are made, then technically the product is supposed to be registered. The Uniform State Fertilizer Bill defines the term label as the display of all written, printed or graphic matter, upon the immediate container, or a statement accompanying a fertilizer. Standardized Rules/Regulations language are developed under the Uniform State Fertilizer Bill which allows for compost to make both nutrient and soil amending claims, when registering it as a fertilizer, and reduces the risk to marketers of bulk claims. Bio-Cycle's home page allows composters to more easily make nutrient claims for their bulk compost, while still making a series of soil amending claims.

Findings from an Innovation Center for US Dairy project have revealed that farmers are finding economic benefit to generate their own digestate liquid instead of aged manure by managing their manure through anaerobic digestion. Wet or low solids digestion is primarily used on farm-based manure management projects and in wastewater treatment facilities. The digestion is done in aqueous conditions in these projects, while dry digestion processes feedstock resembling a compostable mix of organics. Digestate solids from dry digestion are composted while other options exist in wet digesters, and will be driven by the expected end use. Soluble nutrients from the feedstocks will go into solution in wet digestion, reducing the nutrient content of the separated solids. The nutrients are concentrated within the solids in dry digestion, as liquid is generated.
