In order to effectively condition and loosen tobacco bales and decrease steam consumption, a composite vacuum pre-conditioner was designed by incorporating rotary vacuum conditioning and loosening technologies. The pre-conditioner was mainly composed of a driving device for vacuum conditioning, a rotary sealing device, a conditioning device and a cylinder body with tobacco buildup prevention structure. Five testing batches of tobacco bales were processed by the designed pre-conditioner under different technical conditions, the results showed that: 1) The ordering efficiency of tobacco strips reached 100%, their loosening rate was up to 98% with a uniform moisture content. 2) The technical parameters of the new pre-conditioner were adjustable over a wide range, allowed it to process tobacco bales at different intensities; the temperature of the processed tobacco was 50℃ or 65℃. 3) No tobacco built up on the inside wall of cylinder basically, it was convenient in maintenance. 4) The steam consumption reduced by 35% comparing with a traditional vacuum pre-conditioner. Based on the characteristics of mechanical expander, feature analysis of cyclic stress acting on power transmission rod has been made and the value of fatigue limit of rod has also been evaluated. As a result of it, the fatigue safety factor of power transmission rod has been ascertained, and it plays an important role in the design of expanding technique which is used in the production of LSAW in the event of billet with high strength or thick wall.

In PID and feedforward control systems, the control loops for moisture content in dried cut tobacco are relatively independent of each other, low in control precision, poor in coordination and hard to be integrated into a full closed-loop automatic control. A model-based predictive control method was proposed, the model of the dynamic characters of drying process was created by RBF-ARX model. According to production process and technology, drying process was divided into 3 stages (start, middle and finish stages), and controlled by model-based optimized setting or predictive control method separately. To obtain optimal technical parameters, the combined influence of cylinder temperature and moisture exhaust acted at the same time on the moisture content of tobacco was taken into account. The results of application showed that: 1) The drying process was automatically controlled, and interference became unnecessary. 2) The moisture content in tobacco at start and finish stages was controlled within the set value ± 0.5%, at middle stage was controlled within the set value ± 0.2% with the standard diviation of no more than 0.10%, and the fluctuation of moisture content caused by various disturbances could be restrained quickly. 3) The amounts of over-dried tobacco at start and finish stages in a drying operation were less than 0.27% and 0.28% of throughput; the waste and breakage of tobacco reduced. The model-based predictive control method was better than controlling cylinder temperature and moisture exhaust independently, and better fit the requirements of industrial application.

As a solution to the higher breakage rate of strips caused by mechanical action and the intrinsic quality of strips affected by higher temperature in cylinder loosening and conditioning, a pre-loosening device was developed, wherein the vertically sliced tobacco block was subjected to bending and pre-loosened along the layers formed natureally during baling. The conditioning cylinder was modified by replacing the long spikers with octagonal short ones and divided into four functional sections responsible separately for loosening, spreading, conditioning and casing to facilitate following processing. The results showed that the outlet tobacco temperature was lower (≤53℃), the loosening rate of strips was over 99.5%, the average amount of tobacco scraps reduced from 86.5 to 79.6 kg/batch, and the average amount of tobacco dust decreased from 6.1 to 3.2 kg/batch. The new system effectively reduced the processing intensity, decreased the breakage of strips, promoted the uniformity of heating and conditioning, kept natural tobacco aroma, and improved the processing quality of strips. © 2015, Editorial Office of Tobacco Science & Technology. Aiming at the problems of high breakage and poor processing durability of expanded cut tobacco by traditional CO2 expanded cut tobacco processing, a steaming preconditioning discharger was added next to the expansion tower, which moistened the tobacco as it left the tower. Steam was injected into the compartments in the airlock discharger through uniformly distributed nozzles, to allow the tobacco entering into the airlock being evenly humidified and loosed. The results of application showed that after improvement, the percentage of long strands and cut tobacco yield increased by 1.5 and 0.75 percentage points, respectively. Water stained tobacco was avoided in the process of humidifying. The processing durability of expanded cut tobacco was effectively improved, while the breakage of cut tobacco was reduced.

To remove the tobacco dust buildup on wall of cylindrical equipment in tobacco primary processing line, an automatic pneumatic cleaner was developed on the basis of aerodynamic principle of high speed air stream. From a small high-pressure fan, the high speed air stream injected on the inner wall of cylinder acted as a rotary air knife and cleaned the wall areas tended to build up tobacco dust. The results of application showed that after installing the cleaner in cut strips casing cylinder, the average amount of tobacco buildup on the cylinder wall reduced from 40.6 to 3.3 kg/shift. The cleaner has a self-cleaning function, and is simple in structure, it can clean cylinder walls and spikers effectively.

For eliminating the shortcomings associated with screening test in threshing and redrying line, such as tobacco degradation and time lag in detection, an online strips sampling and area measurement device was designed by incorporating threshed strips sampling and mechanically thin-layer spreading, image acquisition and computer processing technologies. The results of application showed that the absolute error of the device was below 2%, and detection duration shortened from 30 to about 10 minutes comparing with screening test.
