Water structure is the most important parameter that influences the flotation of soluble salts. In this paper bubble attachment time measurements and FTIR analyses were performed to investigate the effect of water structure on the flotation behavior of sylvite (KCl), bischofite (MgCl2· 6H2O) and carnallite (KMgCl3·6H2O). The results from bubble attachment time measurements suggest that collector adsorption at the surface of KCl induces flotation with either the cationic collector, ODA, or anionic collector, SDS. In contrast bubble attachment did not occur for bischofite (MgCl2·6H2O) or carnallite (KMgCl3·6H2O). Results show that the surface charge is not a determining factor in the flotation of soluble salts. Further, the interaction between water molecules and the three chloride salts dissolved in aqueous solution were studied by measuring the shift in the hydrogen-bonding of water molecules. The results indicate that KCl is a structure breaker salt, while MgCl2·6H2O and KMgCl3· 6H2O are structure maker salts. Viscosities for the brines of these three salts were determined. The results give additional evidence of differences in water structure and are in good agreement with the FTIR and bubble attachment results. The findings provide further evidence that water structure plays an important role in the flotation of soluble salts. © 2010 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved. Source

Thesis study regional economic situation of sanjiangyuan, analyzed the characteristics of the livestock industry, features folk culture industry, tourism and Tibetan medicine, and use multivariate linear regression equation established herders income Empirical Study model to research how different industries to influence on the pastoral industry revenue. Highly concentrated NaCl, KCl, MgCl2 and MgSO4 solutions were treated using DCMD. The effects of salt concentration (1.0-4.0mol/L) and circulation velocity (0.1-0.5m/s), as well as thermodynamic and physical properties of the salt solutions on permeate flux were investigated. Results showed that the permeate fluxes decrease with increasing concentration for the four salts solutions studied, which follows the order of KCl>NaCl>MgSO4>MgCl2 at the salt concentrations higher than 1.0mol/L. The different vapor pressure depression caused by reduction of water activity was identified as the main reason behind this. However, the drastic increase of viscosity of MgSO4 and MgCl2 solutions at higher salt concentrations would also have a notable adverse impact on permeate flux. Under these circumstances, change of hydrodynamics, i.e. increase of circulation velocity would be a great help to improve the heat transfer and then the flux. To prevent salt from crystallizing on membrane surface in saturated conditions, the feed inlet temperature should be controlled within a certain range, and it was 40 to 50°C, 40 to 45°C and 25 to 35°C for NaCl, KCl, and MgSO4, respectively in this study. © 2014 Elsevier B.V. Direct contact membrane distillation (DCMD) is one of the attractive technologies for high salinity brine treatment. In this study, four polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) membranes were examined in treating highly concentrated salt solutions. Results showed that non-supported membranes generally have a higher overall mass transfer coefficient but porosity seems to be the most important parameter controlling membrane flux and thermal efficiency. Supported membranes with large thickness had relatively higher thermal efficiency than small thickness. This can be attributed to their reduced heat loss through heat condition. In addition, KCl, NaCl and MgCl2 solutions showed distinct trends over flux decline at high salt concentrations (≥2.0M). The difference in flux was largely due to the discrepancy in water activities of these solutions (KCl>NaCl>MgCl2). However, the effect of viscosity on permeate flux could not be neglected for MgCl2 at high salt concentrations as the suddenly increased viscosity could lead to serious temperature polarization. This study indicates that membrane distillation is a promising technology for high salinity brine treatment. © 2014 Elsevier Ltd. Source
