Machining test grading of non-metallic inclusions were carried out on eight heats of free-cutting steel. The results show that no matter whether the steels contained Sn for easy machining, the machinability is deteriorated dramatically with the increase of the grade of oxide inclusions, especially B-type inclusions and C-type inclusions. The main types of oxide inclusion are MnO-Al2O3, MnO-SiO2 and 2MnO-SiO2, which have high hardness and deteriorate the machinability. The machinability could be improved by appropriately increasing oxygen content when the oxygen content and oxide inclusion grade are both lower in the steel, due to the spheroidization of the MnS inclusions. Meanwhile, the machinability has a notable deterioration when oxygen content in the steel is higher, which is attributed to that the obvious increase of the oxide inclusion grade.

XRD analysis was used to compare the textures of tire cord steel produced from four different steel works at home and abroad. The results show that the textures of wire rods produced at domestic and foreign works are obviously different. The strength of {111} texture in the axis of wire rods produced at domestic works is stronger than that at foreign works, however {111} texture in the axis of wire rods has strong orientation, which is adverse to wire drawing. The strength of {111} texture can be obviously decreased by prolonging the heating time of heating furnaces and increasing the heating and laying temperature.

Banded structures of wire rod for tire cord steel on characteristics, hazards, formation mechanism and elimination methods were analyzed. And a new classification of banded structures was established. The results show that the banded structure, there is obvious phosphorus segregation, is composes by sorbite which inter-lamellar spacing is smaller than matrix. The banded structure' nanometer-hardness is higher than the matrix', it brings an adverse effect on the wire properties of rolling and torsion. Compared to bloom, the banded structure of billet is more serious. By increasing heating temperature from 1050 °C to 1185 °C, banded structure get improved.
