The elastic element (4) is arranged between the mass (3) and a wall of the vibration absorption cavity (100). The rail vibration absorber has a simple structure, stable performance and good weatherability, and can effectively slow wear to the steel rail and prolong the service life thereof.

In this study, two ring damping devices are installed on two straight web metro wheels. Experimental study on vibration and sound radiation reduction of the ring damping and standard wheels are conducted in a semi-anechoic room. Impact-hammer and steel balls are used to hit the wheels in the test as the excitations. The vibration and sound radiation of the damping and standard wheels are measured and analyzed. The results show that, under the axial excitation, the damping ratio of the damping wheels increases significantly, compared to the standard wheel. The damping ratio increases about 20 times at these prominent resonance frequencies. The vibration and sound of the damping wheels reduce significantly in the frequency range of 0 - 8 kHz. The sound energy level (SEL) of the damping wheel I (with single ring) is reduced by about 7 dB and the SEL of the damping wheel II (with double rings) is reduced by about 9 dB. The maximum reduction in the SEL at the significant resonance can reach about 27 dB.

On the basis of analysis of essential principles of reducing rail noise by increasing the vibration attenuation ratio, this paper presents a new vibration and noise reduction solution of rails with labyrinth constrained damping structure. This new damping structure can obviously increase the function area of damping layer and benefit vibration and noise reduction. Finite element models of typical damped rail projects and a standard rail are set up, and a damped rail project with an optimal damping effect is selected through the comparative analysis of vibration attenuation effect by dynamics simulation. The technology is already successfully applied in Shanghai Metro Line 10. The measurement results prove that it can reduce the A-weighted sound pressure level by 6 ∼10dB(A)and get to the advanced technology of the same kind.

Using the orthogonal test theory, five full sized tuning mass damped buckling-restrained brace (TMD-BRB) specimens were designed, manufactured and tested. The influence factors included work period, contact surface craft and springs layout. There were 3 levels for work period and 2 levels for the other two. The effects of spring, friction between contact surfaces and force form on the dynamic behavior of specimens were investigated in detail. In addition, the performance of BRBs in the related structures was tested. The tests included free vibration, resonance tests under common seismic intensity and cyclic static tests. Spectral characteristics of specimens, change laws of dynamic coefficients and damping ratios, and hysteretic curves were analyzed. The results showed that the specimens with symmetrical springs and wheels have a high tuning precision, strong TMD properties and standard index for BRB performance to realize a structural balance between composite vibration reduction functions.

For the composite functions of BRB implementation, SRC tube confining the steel core designed as a TMD mass, the core taken as the sliding track, and additional springs added as resilient elements, a new type damper called Tuning Mass Dampered-Buckling Restrained Brace (TMD-BRB) was studied. Results show that it has no affect on the working frequency by slant setting for the component. The TMD dynamic coefficient affects by amplitude, working period and vibration frequency. The contact friction coefficient should be controlled below 0.3. Sliding tests and FEM analysis show that it has a high dynamic coefficient and a stable hysteresis performance by this recommended construction.

In order to implement the composite function of BRB, a new type of buckling-restrained brace with tuning mass damper function (TMD-BRB) was designed and constructed. The composite function of vibration reduction and effect by contact surface craft, springs form and extension of tube in end-range place, were investigated by six dynamic and two static specimens. An optimal structure plan was obtained by contrast. Tests show that the wheel-tube with long making type TMD-BRB had an ideal tuning precision, a high dynamic coefficient and an obvious period performance of vibration. For its BRB performance, the specimen had a stable and plump hysteretic curve in 1/85 brace length. Various indexes, including 1.07 tension-compression ratio, normal stiffness deterioration and skeleton curve, 10% energy consumption attenuation by 30 circles fatigue test, was accorded with the international regulations. The mechanical structure could also reach a constructional balance between the two composite vibration reduction functions with an automatic shift from TMD to BRB in earthquake.
