This paper presents a mutually coupled linear switched reluctance machine with transverse flux for direct-drive wave energy conversions. The operation principle with detailed theoretical derivation is analyzed to verify the higher force capacity of the proposed machine, just due to the mutually coupling characteristics improving the utilization of electric and magnetic circuits in energy conversion. A general nonlinear magnetic equivalent circuit model of the proposed machine that includes all possible flux paths in three-dimension (3D) view of the machine is also introduced, in which Maxwell stress tensor is adopted to simulate electromagnetic force in space. The accuracy of the model has been evaluated by comparison to the simulation result from 3D finite element analysis tool. © 2016 IEEE.
