Purpose: This paper aims to provide an overview of the issues related to developing a digital repository for learning objects. Given the unique nature of digital learning objects, compared to other types of digital materials, several factors must be considered when establishing a learning object repository. Design/methodology/approach: The conclusions of the paper are drawn from a review of the current state of the learning object repository market. Findings: The issues related to creating digital learning object repositories are, in some cases, significantly different from those in creating "traditional" digital repositories. Staffing, metadata, and use considerations must be carefully considered in this unique environment. Originality/value: This paper fills a gap in the current literature by providing a general overview of the current state of software and related practices in the learning object repository area. © Emerald Group Publishing Limited. Purpose: Issues related to accessibility of web based resources are more important than ever. In part this is being driven by demands for more consistent treatment of various accessibility issues on websites. However, recent complaints by students and consumers on commercial sites highlight the fact that issues related to accessibility remain to be resolved. This article aims to review current practice. Design/methodology/approach: The methodology and approach in the article is based on a review of current literature and practice in the area. Findings: Responsive design as well as several techniques and free tools can be used to address many of the most common issues related to accessibility. In this paper, we consider the issue of efficient broadcasting in mobile ad hoc networks (MANETs) using network coding and directional antennas. Network coding-based broadcasting focuses on reducing the number of transmissions each forwarding node performs in the multiple source/multiple message broadcast application, where each forwarding node combines some of the received messages for transmission. With the help of network coding, the total number of transmissions can be reduced compared to broadcasting using the same forwarding nodes without coding. We exploit the usage of directional antennas to network coding-based broadcasting to further reduce energy consumption. A node equipped with directional antennas can divide the omnidirectional transmission range into several sectors and turn some of them on for transmission. In the proposed scheme using a directional antenna, forwarding nodes selected locally only need to transmit broadcast messages, original or coded, to restricted sectors. We also study two extensions. The first extension applies network coding to both dynamic and static forwarding node selection approaches. In the second extension, we design two approaches for the single source/single message issue in the network coding-based broadcast application. Performance analysis via simulations on the proposed algorithms using a custom simulator and ns2 is presented. © 2006 IEEE. Source
