Invented by PTI, Inc. the patented JetBOx™ supersonic oxygen injection system has proven to be an effective tool in increasing Electric Arc Furnace (EAF) production at the same time reducing conversion costs of the EAF. This effect has been achieved by developing for each individual meltshop a unique, efficient method of chemical energy introduction. As each system installation was optimized, the JetBOx™ system evolved to meet the different demands of each meltshop. The JetBOx™ system has been installed in EAF's utilizing batch scrap charging, ConSteel ™ process, DRI and hot metal operations with equally good results. Since 2001 JetBOx™ systems efficiently and safely operate at over 50 different steel facilities meetina the challenge presented at each individual mill.

Process Technology International Inc. (PTI) has developed and installed a new type of automated temperature and metallurgical sampler system (TempBox™) for the Electric Arc Furnace (EAF). The new device is installed into the sidewall of the EAF and improves the safety of operation by eliminating the need to open the slag door for sampling. The unique design keeps the opening in the sidewall air-tight and free of slag during furnace operation. The novel location of the sampler system allows the mechanism to operate with the furnace tilted at any practical angle and takes good samples earlier in the melt down cycle. This paper describes the operation, installation and benefits of PTI's new TempBOx™ system compared to traditional methods of manual and automated metallurgical and temperature sample taking.

The disadvantages of Consteel electric furnaces, which are mainly caused by the low efficiency of heating of a charged metal scrap by effluent furnace gases, are considered. A new concept of an electric-arc furnace with scrap heating on a conveyer by powerful burners, which provide fast scrap heating to 800°C, is proposed. As follows from calculations, the capacity of such a furnace increases substantially, the specific electric power consumption decreases, and the emission of toxic substances into the atmosphere decreases as compared to the existing Consteel furnaces. © 2012 Pleiades Publishing, Ltd.

The design goal of the PTI Swingdoor is to eliminate the need for operation personnel to approach the EAF during power on to clear or clean the slag door area. This paper reviews the cost benefits, operational criteria, assumptions and engineering considerations used in the design and implementation of the PTI Swingdoor. It also examines and discusses the operational results and savings achieved at the current Swingdoor installations. © 2014 by AIST.
