The HIV-1 subtype C has been substituting the subtype B population in southern Brazil. This phenomenon has been previously described in other countries, suggesting that subtype C may possess greater fitness than other subtypes. The HIV-1 long-terminal repeat (LTR) is an important regulatory region critical for the viral life cycle. Sequence insertions immediately upstream of the viral enhancer are known as the most frequent naturally occurring length polimorphisms (MFNLP). Previous reports demonstrated that the MFNLP could lead to the duplication of transcription factor binding sites (TFBS) enhancing the activity of the HIV-1 subtype C LTR. Here, we amplified and sequenced the LTR obtained from proviral DNA samples collected from patients infected with subtype C from the Southern Region of Brazil (naïve or treatment failure) and Mozambique (only naïve). We confirm the presence of different types of insertions in the LTR sequences of both the countries leading to the creation of additional TFBS. In the Brazilian clinical samples, the frequency of the sequence insertion was significantly higher in subjects experiencing treatment failure than in antiretroviral naïve patients. © 2014 by the authors; licensee MDPI, Basel, Switzerland.

The majority of the Conservation Units (CUs) of Curitiba (Paraná state, Brazil) are plagued by invasive alien tree species (IATs). However, no studies have been carried out to evaluate their impact or to determine the appropriate management techniques. The objective of this study is to evaluate the participation of IATs and the implications and management of the most significant species causing major structural change in the floristic-structural composition of ‘Barreirinha’ Park, a remnant of Araucaria Forest. Four plots were evaluated in a total area of 1600 m2 representing approximately 4% of the total area of the forest. A total of 354 individual trees were sampled with a diameter of ≥ 15 cm, and for each species sampled, parameters were calculated of the relative frequency, relative density, relative dominance and the importance value. It was possible to identify 29 families, 43 genera and 57 species, three of which were IATs. The sustainability and integrity of this Conservation Unit can be threatened by the presence of Pittosporum undulatum (Sweet Pittosporum), the species with the greatest structural importance value, high density and frequency. Possible management strategies for the Pittosporum undulatum species are presented. © 2015, Universidade Federal de Santa Maria. All rights reserved.

One of the greatest challenges worldwide is the loss of biodiversity in Conservation Units (CUs) due to their infestation by invasive exotic trees (IETs). Aiming to provide additional basis to a better understanding of the IETs global dispersion as well as to their local control, the results from a qualitative and quantitative IETs survey (DBH ≥ 15 cm) at 22 CUs of Curitiba (Parana State, Southern Brazil) are presented and discussed.

The objective was to analyze production costs and profitability of grazing sheep productions systems under three strategies of lamb's supplementation: (1) white clover on creep grazing; (2) creep feeding; and (3) not supplemented. Two methods of financial analyses where used: annual (short term) and cash flow (long term). Costs were classified into variable, fixed, operational and total. Results showed that feeding and opportunity cost over investment was the most important production factors at variable and total costs, respectively. System with creep grazing supplementation did not show greater economic financial results over creep feeding supplementation system.

An evaluation was made of the perception of oral health teams regarding Atraumatic Restorative Treatment (ART) as a primary oral healthcare strategy used by the Municipal Health Department of Curitiba, Paraná State. A study was made both of Health Units (HU) that operate using the Family Health Strategy (FHSHU) and those that do not (Basic Healthcare Units - BHU). The sample involved 191 oral health professionals proportionally (CI=95%, e=6%). A questionnaire was used to collect data. The information was analyzed using the SPSS 13.0 program. The response rate was 82%. Chi-square testing did not reveal a statistically significant difference between the FHSHU (83.1%) and the BHU (74.3%) with regard to knowledge about the technique (p>0.05). A difference was found as to training in ART among the different HU (p<0.01) and the use of the technique by the services (p<0.01). The length of training and the length of service of dental health professionals at the municipal health service were relevant in relation to knowledge of the technique and the taking of clinical decisions as to ART. The conclusion was reached that training on ART is needed at the primary healthcare level as a result of the different perceptions revealed.

Epilepsy and Behavior Case Reports | Year: 2016

We report on a 20-year-old patient with a 6-month history of recurrent abdominal pain and a 3-day history of vomiting, hypertension, seizures, and encephalopathy. The brain MRI showed posterior reversible encephalopathy syndrome, and continuous EEG (cEEG) monitoring showed lateralized periodic discharges plus fast activity. Comprehensive CSF studies were negative. Because of severe abdominal pain without a definite etiology, we requested urine porphobilinogen and serum and fecal porphyrins, which suggested acute intermittent porphyria (AIP). The patient had a complete resolution of her symptoms with carbohydrate loading and high caloric diet. Acute intermittent porphyria is potentially life-threatening without proper management and prevention of triggers if it is not recognized. © 2016 The Authors
