Kyanite is a kind of high alumina raw materials, can be decomposed to mullite and SiO2 at high temperature,and expands obviously. The expansion at high temperature of kyanite is a unique property,so kyanite is usually used as a raw materials added into products to offset the shrink caused by matrix or sintering. Products with kyanite have stable high volume,good thermal shock resistance and good creep resistance,so the high temperature performance of products can be improved and the service life of products can be increased. Kyanite also has the characteristics of acid and alkali resistance,corrosion resistance,strong impact resistance,good electrical insulation properties,so it is widely used in the field of metallurgy,ceramics,refractories,glass,machinery, electric power,chemical industry,etc. According to the newest investigation of kyanite used in shaped refractories,monolithic refracoties,ceramics,synthesis of raw material,preparation of spe-cial materials,the progress on utilization of kyanite material was systematically introduced in this paper. With enhanced increasing of environmental protection consciousness in China, some traditional refractories with good performance but bad for human beings and environment were challenged. The new idea of environment-friendly refractories was put forward in recent years. Environment-friendly refractories meant that carcinogenic substance and toxic substance which were bad for environment and human beings were not used in the production process, lots of dust were not produced in construction process, harmful gas and toxic substance were not produced in application process, and used residual materials should be with recycle value and not be as a kind of industrial refuse. Progress of development of environment-friendly refractories at home and abroad was collected in this paper, and the current status of some environment-friendly refractories such as new fluoride-free acid resistant material, chrome-free refractories, new bio-soluble refractory fiber, low temperature carbon ramming mix and wet and dust-free gunning mix were overviewed, in order to promote the development of refractory industries in China. Bauxite based gunning mix was prepared using bauxite as starting material, calcium aluminate cement and silica fume as binders, firing at 1 000, 1 300 and 1 500 °C for 3 h. Effects of tabular corundum powder and alumina micropowder on properties of bauxite based gunning mix were investigated. The results show that tabular corundum powder and alumina micropowder have no obvious effect on bulk density of bauxite based gunning mix; when heat treated at 1 000 °C, the specimen with both tabular corundum powder and alumina micropowder shows higher modulus of rupture and cold crushing strength; specimen with only alumina micropowder has better abrasion resistance but worse thermal shock resistance than specimens with only tabular corundum powder. Effect of kyanite addition on properties of plastic refractories that based on Chinese calcined flint clay were investigated with the Chinese calcined flint clay as raw materials, aluminum sulfate and fireclay as binding systems. After 24 h curing after demoulding and another 24 h curing at 110°C, the specimens were heat-treated at 1000, 1300 and 1500°C for 3 h, respectively. The permanent linear change, bulk density, modulus of rupture, clod crushing strength, thermal expansion coefficient and thermal shock resistance were examined. The results show that the shrinkage of plastic refractory decreased with increasing kyanite addition after heat-treated at 1000 and 1300°C, and its expansivity increased with increasing kyanite addition after heat-treated at 1500 °C. The strength can be increased when kyanite was added into the plastic refractory. The thermal expansion coefficient and the expansivity were increased, and the shrinkage can be reduced at high temperature when kyanite addition was more than 10%. On the condition of this experiment, the thermal shock resistance of plastic refractory was the best when kyanite addition is w(kyanite)=10%. © 2013 Science Press, Institute of Geochemistry, CAS and Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg. Effects of different silicon carbide contents on thermal shock resistance properties of mullite-bauxite castable refractory were analyzed respectively by taking the mullite, bauxite as main raw materials and taking calcium aluminate cement as a binding system. After 24 h curing in mould and another 24 h curing at 110° after demoulding, the samples were heated at 1000, 1300 and 1500° for 3 h in air, respectively. The bulk density, thermal expansion coefficient and thermal shock resistance were examined. The results showed that there was a great effect of content of SiC on bulk density, thermal expansion coefficient and thermal shock resistance of mullite-bauxite castable. Under the experimental conditions, the castable performed the best thermal shock resistance when w(SiC)=5%-10%. © 2012 Science Press, Institute of Geochemistry, CAS and Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg.
