Comparison exercises have been carried out by different research teams to study the sensitivity of the natural convection occurring in a vertical asymmetrically heated channel to four sets of open boundary conditions. The dimensionless parameters have been chosen so that a return flow exists at the outlet. On the whole, results provided by the partners are in good agreement; benchmark solutions are then defined for each of the boundary conditions. Whilst the local and average Nusselt numbers based on the entrance temperature do not depend much on conditions applied in the aperture sections, the net fluid flow rates crossing the channel and the characteristics of the recirculation cells are highly influenced. But we proved that these modifications of flow patterns do not alter significantly the fluid flow rates leaving the channel through the exit section. © 2013 Elsevier Masson SAS. The asymptotic analysis carried out in this paper for the problem of a multiple scattering in three dimensions of a time-harmonic wave by obstacles whose size is small as compared with the wavelength establishes that the effect of the small bodies can be approximated at any order of accuracy by the field radiated by point sources. Among other issues, this asymptotic expansion of the wave furnishes a mathematical justification with optimal error estimates of Foldy’s method that consists in approximating each small obstacle by a point isotropic scatterer. Finally, it is shown how this theory can be further improved by adequately locating the center of phase of the point scatterers and the taking into account of self-interactions. In this way, it is established that the usual Foldy model may lead to an approximation whose asymptotic behavior is the same than that obtained when the multiple scattering effects are completely neglected. © 2015, Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg.

The present paper is concerned with the results of the numerical investigation of unpermanent laminar, natural convection in an asymmetrically heated inclined open channel (i = 0,45,60 and 75° ) with walls at uniform heat flux (qw = 10,50,75 and 100 W m-2). Two methodological approaches have been adopted to investigate the air flow in these configurations: 2D and 3D description, and four sets of inlet-outlet velocity-pressure boundary conditions have been considered. Significant differences are observed in the flow dynamics between 2D and 3D results. The numerical results are compared with the experimental data and a good agreement is obtained when a local pressure boundary condition is applied at the inlet/outlet sections in the 3D case. A generalized correlation for the average Nusselt number is then obtained from numerical results. This correlation covers a wide range of the modified Rayleigh number and aspect ratio values (Ramcos(i) varying from 1.71 × 104 to 3.60 × 106 and 6.5 < H/b < 12.8). © 2015 Elsevier Masson SAS.
