The first part of this paper describes the high dynamic range CMOS (HDRC®) imager - a special type of CMOS image sensor with logarithmic response. The powerful property of a high dynamic range (HDR) image acquisition is detailed by mathematical definition and measurement of the optoelectronic conversion function (OECF) of two different HDRC imagers. Specific sensor parameters will be discussed including the pixel design for the global shutter readout. The second part will give an outline on the applications and requirements of cameras for industrial safety. Equipped with HDRC global shutter sensors SafetyEYE® is a high-performance stereo camera system for safe three-dimensional zone monitoring enabling new and more flexible solutions compared to existing safety guards. © 2013 Thoss Media & De Gruyter.

A discussion covers the Pilz Company modern control system in use on cable cars for their safe operation. The cable cars were built by the Austrian-Swiss Doppelmayr-Garaventa Group for use on the run to the Gaislachkogl mountain peak. One cable car makes the run from the valley at 1,363 m above sea level to 2,174 m from where the 3S cable car with 30-passenger cabin runs to 3,040 m for a total travel time of 12 min. Two PSS 3000 programmable control systems control and carry out standard and safety functions of the 3S cable railway. The area of the mountain peak in which the 3S cable car operates has permafrost such that when it melts, disturbances occur underground such that the cable system constantly has to be adjusted. At the start of the 2010/11 winter season the renowned Sölden ski resort daily received up to several thousand guests who arrived using this most modern and secure PSS 3000 control for the 3S cable car and its cable. The discussion covers the control system for greater efficiency and safety; the complete solution for safety and standard; and communication for greater safety without feedback. Communication on the control level is made using the secure and open SafetyBUS p fieldbus. Through its modular hardware construction the PSS 3000 control system is flexibly adjustable, the communication interfaces to fieldbuses are designed open and allow connection to all ongoing standard fieldbuses and Ethernet over the secure open SafetyBUS p Pilz bus system. At the Gaislachkogl cable railway communication between both stations occurs via fiber optic cable over SafetyBUS p. The secure bus system guarantees over its feedback-free communication that in the event of danger the standard processes of the cable railway have no effect on the safety functions. Because solid wiring for signal transmission is not needed, only the stations are hard wired. An event-oriented transmission guarantees extremely short reaction times. News are sent only when an event, a change in the condition occurs such that SafetyBUS p is especially suited for variously designed report frequencies and great demands on reaction time.

Thanks to the head module for Profinet, the film manufacturer Profol could integrate this interface simply and securely in terms of investment into the existing equipment, and thus continue to rely on the Industrial Ethernet Standard.
