A quantitative method of assessing the quality of steel and alloys has been developed, on the basis of the agreement of the plasticity and mechanical stability Kms with the optimal values at specified strength σ0. 2. A new characteristic is introduced: the quality index. The critical ductile-brittle transition temperature is found to increase with decrease in the metal's quality index. Steels and alloys of different strength may be classified in terms of the corresponding quality group, the quality levels within these groups, and the optimality of their mechanical stability. © 2012 Allerton Press, Inc.

The operation of blast furnaces with a redesigned shaft, in which cooling is based on large cooled panels, is considered. The redesigned shafts prove more reliable and economically efficient than the traditional design (characterized by a housing, a cast-iron cooling plate, and a lining). At PAO MMK im. Il'icha, more than 100 mln t of hot metal has been smelted at the new blast furnaces. Experience shows that the new design extends the furnace run by a factor of 1.3-1.5, reduces the shaft's repair time by 4-6 days, and reduces repair costs by a factor of 5-8. Furnace productivity is increased by 1.5-2.0%, with decrease in coke consumption by 1.5-3.0%. © 2011 Allerton Press, Inc.

The reduction processes in the blast furnaces at PAO MMK im. Il'icha are compared. A mathematical model permits prediction of the change in reduction parameters and coke consumption with improvement in the gas distribution. The best estimate of the scope of reduction by gases in blast furnaces with different parameters is obtained on the basis of the completeness of indirect reduction. © 2011 Allerton Press, Inc.

The heating of hot metal in the ladle on discharge from the blast furnace is considered. In this case, the heating is due to aluminum flux, which is an exothermal slag-forming powder made from slag wastes obtained in secondary aluminum production. The proposed technology reduces the slag-metal buildup and increases the life of the refractory lining to 500 filling cycles. Effective heat insulation of the hot-metal surface reduces the heat losses to 15-20°C prior to mixer delivery. The slag runoff is reduced by 25-45% (rel.). © 2011 Allerton Press, Inc.
