Provided are processes for the calibration of a battery system whereby a secondary battery is formed with an anode, a cathode, or both that includes two or more active materials that differ by at least one chemical or physical parameter. The presence of the two or more differing alloys in the system introduces at least one inflection point in the charge/discharge curves characterizing the system. The location of the inflection point relative to the fresh battery SOC is constant and independent of prior usage, cycling characteristics, or battery temperature. Therefore, by measuring the presence of the inflection point during a charge/discharge cycle or resting state, the exact SOC of the battery is known. If this measured SOC differs from a reference SOC by more than a predetermined value, the predetermined value is updated thereby calibrating the system for accurate display of SOC.


Laves phase-related BCC metal hydride alloys historically have limited electrochemical capabilities. Provided are a new examples of these alloys useful as electrode active materials. Also provided are processes of activating such alloys. Alloys include a composition defined by Formula I: TiwVxCryMz (I) where w+x+y+z = 1, 0.1(FR)Les alliages dhydrures mtalliques BCC du type phase de Laves ont historiquement des capacits lectrochimiques limites. An electrochemical cell is provided that includes a structurally and compositionally disordered electrochemically active alloy material as an anode active material with unexpected capacity against a nickel hydroxide based cathode active material. The disordered metal hydroxide alloy includes three or more transition metal elements and is formed in such a way so as to produce the necessary disorder in the overall system. When an anode active material includes nickel as a predominant, the resulting cells represent the first demonstration of a functional Ni/Ni cell.

Provided are sealed pouch-cell batteries that are alkaline batteries or non-aqueous proton-conducing batteries. A pouch cell includes a flexible housing such as is used for pouch cell construction where the housing is in the form of a pouch, a cathode comprising a cathode active material suitable for use in an alkaline battery, an anode comprising an anode active material suitable for use in an alkaline battery, an electrolyte that is optionally an alkaline or proton-conducting electrolyte, and wherein the pouch does not include or require a safety vent or other gas absorbing or releasing system as the anode active material and the cathode active material do not increase the internal atmospheric pressure any more than 2 psig during cycling. The batteries provided function contrary to the art recognized belief that such battery systems were impossible due to unacceptable gas production during cycling.

BCC metal hydride alloys provided include a pressure plateau in the desorption PCT isotherm measured at 30 C. with center between 0.1 MPa and 1.0 MPa, and/or a plateau region between 0.05 weight percent to 0.5 weight percent of H_(2). This pressure plateau represents a new catalytic phase capable of producing increased capacity in the absence of additional catalytic phases.

The structurally disordered hydrogen storage alloys possess unexpectedly superior electrochemical characteristics relative to compositionally similar materials.
