The heat and mass transfer in a bed of iron-ore pellets on a conveyer roasting machine is investigated by mathematical simulation. Two thermal (temperature) waves are observed in the bed, associated with the fluxes of hot gas from the hearth and the heat liberated in magnetite oxidation. By controlling these thermal waves, the filtration rate and temperature may be optimized over the length of the machine, so as to minimize the fuel consumption in pellet roasting and to boost pellet quality. © 2014, Allerton Press, Inc. On the basis of a universal model developed at OOO NPVP TOREX, the influence of the main operational parameters of conveyer-type roasting machines on the thermal characteristics of roasting is analyzed. The relation between the productivity and fuel consumption of the machine, as well as the strength of the pellets produced, is established for different thermal and operating conditions.
