In the sintering shop at OAO Ural’skaya Stal’, industrial trials are conducted with a view to improving the pelletization by wetting the sintering batch with water-soluble organic surfactants. The use of surfactants improves the granulometric composition of the batch, its gas permeability, and hence the sintering efficiency. The use of surfactant is most effective with optimal wetting of the batch (7–8%), with consumption of the experimental binder at a rate of 1.2–1.6 L/h. The production of lime by bed roasting in a MAK-90 sintering machine is considered. The thermal and material balances of the process are analyzed. An adapted mathematical model of sintering permits analysis of the thermophysical characteristics of batch drying, primarily in the main sintering period. Over the whole length of the sintering machine, most of the bed volume corresponds to equilibrium moisture content, which may be higher or lower than the initial value. The gas dynamics of the sintering bed is analyzed. The proposed method for calculating the gas-dynamic parameters of sintering permits quantitative estimation of the gas permeability of the bed on the basis of data regarding the properties of the initial batch.
