The production of lime by bed roasting in a MAK-90 sintering machine is considered. The thermal and material balances of the process are analyzed. The production of iron-ore sinter using lime and polymer binder is experimentally studied. The supply of lime to the batch (in doses of 30 kg/t) is comparable in efficiency with the use of polymer binder (in doses of 150 g/t). An adapted mathematical model of sintering permits analysis of the thermophysical characteristics of batch drying, primarily in the main sintering period. Over the whole length of the sintering machine, most of the bed volume corresponds to equilibrium moisture content, which may be higher or lower than the initial value. The temperature of the gas entering the drying zone is calculated, and its dependence on the parameters of the batch and gas is determined. © 2013 Allerton Press, Inc.

If the emissions of nitrogen oxides NOx in the sintering of iron ore may be curbed, the environmental and human impact of the process will be reduced. On the basis of experimental data, the NOx formation in iron-ore sintering is analyzed. Data from an industrial sintering machine indicate that no more than half of the nitrogen in solid fuel is converted to NOx. The NOx content in the gases from sintering machines is proportional to the carbon-monoxide content. This finding may be used in predicting the NOx emissions from sintering machines in calculations and simulations. © 2016, Allerton Press, Inc.

In the sintering shop at OAO Ural’skaya Stal’, industrial trials are conducted with a view to improving the pelletization by wetting the sintering batch with water-soluble organic surfactants. The use of surfactants improves the granulometric composition of the batch, its gas permeability, and hence the sintering efficiency. The use of surfactant is most effective with optimal wetting of the batch (7–8%), with consumption of the experimental binder at a rate of 1.2–1.6 L/h. The proposed method for calculating the gas-dynamic parameters of sintering permits quantitative estimation of the gas permeability of the bed on the basis of data regarding the properties of the initial batch. Experience at OOO NPVP TOREKS in the modernization of Russian conveyer roasting machines and those produced by Severnyi enrichment facility (Ukraine) is considered. The basic measures adopted in the modernization of OK-228, OK-306, OK-520, OK-536, and Lurgi-460 machines considerably improve the productivity and reduce the energy costs. Approaches to the development of Russian conveyer roasting machines are outlined. As well as design improvements, the thermal systems of machines in the range from OK-108 to OK-520 have been modified. Measures to increase productivity and reduce energy consumption in pellet production are noted.
