The electric double layer capacitor (EDLC) electrode is made of carbonized and activated materials. The material surface and electrical characteristics of carbon materials produced from low cost organic materials were examined. First, a cotton cloth was carbonized and activated, and its optimal time and temperature of carbonization and activation processing were examined. And, its surface area, pore volume and pore size distributions were analyzed. Second, activated carbons were applied to the electrodes of 1Wh class EDLC cell with water electrolyte solution. The capacitances and internal resistances of the assembled EDLC cell were measured by a charge and discharge circuit using constant voltage source. And, the charge and discharge cycle test was performed on these assembled EDLC cells under practical use condition. As a result, EDLC cells using the activated carbon with large surface area of 1300m2/g showed the high density of capacitance 0.5-1.1F/cm2. The internal resistances of EDLC cells were less than 0.34Ω. It was also found that the EDLC cells had no deterioration in the charge and discharge cycle test under practical condition. It shows that the activated carbon made of cotton cloth contributes to the low cost and safety electrode of an EDLC. © 2014 The Institute of Electrical Engineers of Japan.

The activated carbon sheets made of cotton cloth were applied to the EDLC electrodes. The capacitance and internal resistance of the assembled EDLC cell in a beaker were measured. The density of capacitance was approximately 1F/cm2 in the EDLC electrode. The internal resistance was less than 1Ω in the EDLC cell. It was confirmed that the capacitance of active carbon sheet made of cotton cloth is in proportion to the area of active carbon sheet. From the obtained results, there is a possibility of the practical use of EDLC which is made of the carbonized and activated cotton cloth in low cost. © 2014 The Institute of Electrical Engineers of Japan.

Troodontidae is a clade of small-bodied theropod dinosaurs. A new troodontid, Gobivenator mongoliensis gen. et sp. nov., is described based on the most complete skeleton of a Late Cretaceous member of this clade presently known, from the Campanian Djadokhta Formation in the central Gobi Desert. G. mongoliensis is different from other troodontids in possessing a pointed anterior end of the fused parietal and a fossa on the surangular in front of the posterior surangular foramen. The skull was superbly preserved in the specimen and provides detailed information of the entire configuration of the palate in Troodontidae. Overall morphology of the palate in Gobivenator resembles those of dromaeosaurids and Archaeopteryx, showing an apparent trend of elongation of the pterygoid process of the palatine and reduction of the pterygopalatine suture toward the basal Avialae. The palatal configuration suggests that the skull of Gobivenator would have been akinetic but had already acquired prerequisites for later evolution of cranial kinesis in birds, such as the loss of the epipterygoid and reduction in contact areas among bones. © 2014 Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg.

We assessed the potential of drosophilids as indicators of the response of tropical ecosystems to climatic factors over an annual cycle in the montane forest of Mt Oku, by collecting samples at seven sites evenly spaced from 2200. m to 2800. m asl. Only 0.1% of the 11,000 specimens collected belonged to invading species or those commensal with humans, showing the weakness of anthropogenic factors. Species abundance was highly skewed. One species, Zaprionus vittiger, made up 81% of the sample, whereas 42 of the 62 morphological species found were represented by fewer than 20 individuals. Many of the most abundant species occurred over a narrow period, in the dry or in the rainy season, others also occurred at intervening periods. These different patterns of population dynamics, determined a succession of species over the annual cycle. Abundant species departed significantly from each other in their distribution over collection sites. The drosophilid populations from the central African montane forests are highly dependent on climatic factors, either directly, or indirectly through climatic effects on the biotic environment of the insects. © 2013 .

The activated carbon particles made of charcoal were applied to the EDLC electrodes by using an alkaline activation method. The capacitance and internal resistance of the assembled EDLC cell were measured with 34% KOH water Electrolyte. The density of energy was approximately 2.6Wh/L in the EDLC cells. The internal resistance was less than 80mΩ in the EDLC cell. Outdoor LED lights were assembled by the charcoal EDLCs adding the solar panel, LED light and their control circuits to confirm the operations of its charcoal EDLC. From the obtained results, there is a possibility of the outdoor practical use of EDLC which is made of the activated charcoal particles in low cost. © 2015 The Institute of Electrical Engineers of Japan.
