Taking into account gain nonlinearity allows one to obtain anomalously high noise levels in a fibre Bragg grating laser diode. This paper examines the effect of the gain nonlinearity due to spectral hole burning on noise characteristics. © 2015 Kvantovaya Elektronika and Turpion Ltd.

A line of travelling-wave semiconductor optical amplifiers (SOAs) based on heterostructures used for production of broadband superluminescent diodes is developed. The pure small-signal gains of the developed SOA modules are about 25 dB, while the gain bandwidths at a level of -10 dB reach 50 - 100 nm. As a whole, the SOA modules cover the IR spectral range from 750 to 1100 nm. The SOAs demonstrate a high reliability at a single-mode fibre-coupled cw output power up to 50 mW. Examples of application of two of the developed SOA modules as active elements of broadband fast-tunable lasers are presented. © 2013 Kvantovaya Elektronika and Turpion Ltd.

Using the rate equations for the density of photons and charge carriers, we have studied the amplitude low-frequency noise of a fibre Bragg grating semiconductor laser. The calculations rely on two versions of the rate equation for the carriers, characterised by the presence of the optical confinement coefficient for the term, which takes into account the rate of stimulated recombination. It is shown that the relative noise intensity, which is calculated by using the rate equation for the carriers without optical confinement, agrees better with the experimental results. The calculation of the amplitude -frequency characteristics (AFCs) has shown that it is impossible to give preference to any one of these systems, since the AFCs for the two versions of the rate equations for the carriers coincide. © 2013 Kvantovaya Elektronika and Turpion Ltd.

We have studied the amplitude noise in a fibre Bragg grating laser diode. It has been shown that discontinuities in noise characteristics correlate with those in the power -current and spectral characteristics of the laser diode, whereas the noise characteristics of the pump source have no such discontinuities. The highest noise level has been observed at pump currents corresponding to concurrent generation of two longitudinal modes. © 2013 Kvantovaya Elektronika and Turpion Ltd.

With the specific features of electronic systems of a Zeeman laser gyroscope taken into account, the basic physical mechanisms of the magnetic field effect on the bias stability and the factors giving rise to the internal magnetic fields are revealed. The hardware-based methods of reducing the effect of external and internal magnetic fields are considered, as well as the algorithmic methods for increasing the stability of the bias magnetic component by taking into account its reproducible temperature and time dependences. Typical experimental temperature and time dependences of the magnetic component of the Zeeman laser gyro bias are presented, and by their example the efficiency of the proposed methods for reducing the effect of magnetic fields is shown. © 2015 Kvantovaya Elektronika and Turpion Ltd.

We have developed two new types of lasers based on quantum-confined semiconductor optical amplifiers with an acousto-optic tunable filter in an external fibre ring cavity. The lasers offer continuous wavelength tuning ranges from 780 to 885 and from 880 to 1010 nm, 20 mW of cw output power, and a tuning rate up to 104 nm s-1 at an instantaneous spectral linewidth less than 0.1 nm. © 2015 Kvantovaya Elektronika and Turpion Ltd.

We report the simulation of power-current characteristics of high-power semiconductor lasers emitting in the range 1.5-1.55 mm. A technique is described which allows one to determine the thermal resistance and characteristic temperatures of a laser diode. The radiative and nonradiative carrier recombination rates are evaluated. Simulation results are shown to agree well with experimental data. © 2014 Kvantovaya Elektronika and Turpion Ltd.

We report superluminescent diodes (SLDs) with three ridged active channels, each having a width of 3.5 mm, based on one 'bulk' and two quantum-well heterostructures. At a cw output power greater than 100 mW, the emission spectra of these SLDs possess a quasi-Gaussian shape with centre wavelengths near 840, 860 and 1060 nm and widths about 15, 25 and 40 nm, respectively. In the above operating conditions, the median service life of the SLDs amounted to approximately 50000, 25000 and more than 60000 h, respectively. © 2016 Kvantovaya Elektronika and Turpion Ltd.

A two-channel method is proposed for measuring losses in an optical ring resonator (RR), in which eigenmodes (counterpropagating waves) are excited by means of a Zeeman ring He-Ne laser with a wavelength of 632.8 nm. The measured frequency splitting of the laser counterpropgating waves is used to determine the absolute value of losses in an exemplary RR. The value of losses in the measured RR is determined by comparing the resonance width of the output radiation intensity with the resonance width of the radiation intensity for an exemplary resonator. The algorithm of intensity resonance processing takes into account the distortions caused by the dynamic effect, which allows a significant increase in the accuracy (up to 1 %-2 %) and sensitivity of the proposed method. The measured losses in the RR with a perimeter of 28 cm constitute 80-5000 ppm. © 2016 Kvantovaya Elektronika and Turpion Ltd.
