Bismuth oxychloride (BiOCl) nano-flakes were prepared with hydrolyzing bismuth salt in the presence of hydrochloric acid. The phase, morphologies and thermal decomposition behavior of the as-synthesized BiOCl were characterized by X-ray diffraction, thermal field emission scanning electron microscopy, high-resolution field emission transmission electron microscopy and thermogravimetric analysis, respectively. The photocatalytic activity of crystal sample was investigated. The results show that the nanoflakes with a thickness of approximately 70 nm and a cross section of approximately 300 nm×500 nm can be prepared by a hydrolysis method. The crystals are decomposed at > 600℃, and the final product at 800℃ is Bi3O4Cl.
