European Space Agency Bulletin | Year: 2010
Europe's involvement in security is developing, both politically and operationally, and European Space Agency (ESA) has an important role to play in giving Europe the space-based tools it needs for the delivery of its political priorities in security. ESA's ongoing security-related activities can be divided into programs dealing with security in space and those contributing to security on Earth. In November 2008, as a first step in the development of a European system, the ESA Council decided to launch a Preparatory Program for Space Situational Awareness (SSA) geared to support the European independent utilization of and access to space for research or services, through providing timely and quality data, information, services and knowledge regarding the environment, the threats and the sustainable exploitation of the outer space surrounding planet Earth. The Preparatory Program is investigating the overall system architecture, defining user requirements and providing a set of precursor services.
