Graphene-based nanomaterials have become the focus of attention in nanotechnology due to their unique properties. An exceptional charge transport mobility and thermal, optical and mechanical properties make them an interesting material in many applications including electrochemical biosensing. Saccharides play important roles in organisms. Changes in glycosylation and in structure of glycans can induce many diseases or can be induced by diseases. Glycan biochips and biosensors are novel techniques the main role of which is to study the glycan – protein interactions. In the construction of biochips and biosensors it is important to create a surface similar to cell surface. Out of several methods of glycan immobilization, two major groups are covalent and noncovalent techniques. This review deals with the main characteristics of modern nanostructures like Au nanoparticles or C nanotubes and the great potential of their application in biosensor manufacture. The principles of biosensing are also mentioned, focusing on the label-free electrochemical detection using self-assembled monolayers on Au surfaces. This review deals mostly with biosensors for use in clinical chemistry and diagnostics as immunosensors. Application of nanoparticles can improve electrode transduction although antigens and antibodies do not form a redox couple. Source

This review gives the main characteristics of mostly commercially available lectins, including their specificity and practical aspects. Various methods, often routinely used, are described, including manufacture of lectin-based biosensors. Other laboratory techniques, mostly for biomedical purposes (such as glycocode decoding, detection of pathogens and antibodies) and their applications in early diagnostics using the array formats are also mentioned.
