Nickel-free 10ΓAΦD{cyrillic}Π1 steel of elevated strength, low-temperature strength, and low-temperature resistance has been developed. On the basis of the new steel, a production technology for rolled sheet and cold-bent profiles (thickness 3.6-5.0 mm) for freight-car production is proposed. In the electrosmelting shop at OAO Magnitogorskii Metallurgicheskii Kombinat (MMK), a batch of the new steel (160 t) has been produced and rolled to 4.5 × 1500 mm sheet in the 2500 mill. Coils of this steel are used to produce bent profiles for freight-car production. The new 10ΓAΦD{cyrillic}Π steel surpasses mass-produced 10XHD{cyrillic}Π 1 steel in terms of its suitability for freight-car components. © 2010 Allerton Press, Inc.

The possibility of influencing friction-induced processes and friction parameters through catalytic phenomena is discussed. A catalytic effect is shown using examples of material treatment and friction with the collection of electric current. The friction-induced catalytic effect is described based on nonequilibrium thermodynamics and the theory of self-organization. Addition of a catalyst into rubbing materials can help increase the wear rate of the materials under mechanical treatment or decrease the wear rate of wear-resistant materials by accelerating spontaneous or nonspontaneous physicochemical processes, respectively. © 2011 Allerton Press, Inc.

Foreign data are reviewed regarding the corrosion of rolled sheet made of 32 different low-carbon steels in the atmosphere. Sheet and structures with an experimental span structure are made from 14XΓHD{cyrillic}Ts{cyrillic} steel. After 20 years, a protective film of corrosion products is formed, and corrosion practically stops. The thickness of the rolled steel is reduced by less than 0.1 mm. © 2012 Allerton Press, Inc.
