At OAO Ural'skaya Stal', the profile of 270 × 1200 mm continuous-cast slab is often distorted: the narrow faces become convex and the broad faces become concave near the edge. The dependence of the distortion on the length of the system supporting the billet's narrow faces is investigated. Statistically significant relationships are established between the distortion parameters. A mechanism is proposed for the distortion of the billet with the existing supporting system for the slab's narrow faces under the mold. In the sintering shop at OAO Ural’skaya Stal’, industrial trials are conducted with a view to improving the pelletization by wetting the sintering batch with water-soluble organic surfactants. The use of surfactants improves the granulometric composition of the batch, its gas permeability, and hence the sintering efficiency. The use of surfactant is most effective with optimal wetting of the batch (7–8%), with consumption of the experimental binder at a rate of 1.2–1.6 L/h. The main chemical reactions during the initial stage of low-temperature coal oxidation in air are discussed. The contribution of these reactions to the overall oxidative process is determined by the coal structure. Water molecules may accelerate coal oxidation by the formation of aldehyde fragments that react with molecular oxygen by a radical-chain reaction, to produce acidic structures. However, they may also slow the reaction of oxygen with coal by screening the active centers. © 2013 Allerton Press, Inc. Source
