A new design has been developed for composite rollers so as to eliminate azimuthal and axial displacement of the wrapper relative to the shaft, reduce the tensile stress in the wrapper, and increase roller life. Reliable attachment is ensured by a specially designed mechanical link between the shaft and wrapper. The proposed approach is expedient in the manufacture and repair of supporting rollers in hot- and cold-rolling mills, large working rollers for hot-rolling mills, rollers in roller conveyers and secondary cooling lines for continuous-casting machines. Wear-resistant wrappers significantly improve roller performance and also roller life in extreme situations. © 2013 Allerton Press, Inc. Source

Anomalous surges are observed in upper-level systems in current production conditions. Such surges may disable the optimization system and so impair product quality. For the control of sinter production, mathematical models capable of describing complex systems with variable properties are required. A method of correcting the measurement results obtained during anomalous surges is proposed. This method allows the change in state of the object being controlled to be taken into account. Mechanism of pearlite formation in the base metal in melting of coatings based on self-fluxing alloys was studied. A zone in the form of a complex carboboride (Fe, Ni, Cr, Si) (BC) in the multilayer coating-steel interface was found and studied. The effect of pore space filling by needles of carboboride phases of the solid interlayer was revealed. It was shown that the coating composition and characteristics of strengthening additives (composition and dispersity) affect the structuring of the transition zone. © 2013 Pleiades Publishing, Ltd. Simulation of the thermal state of continuous-cast slabs permits comparative analysis of two cooling systems: the periphery-center system; and remote control of the pipe positions. These systems differ in the distribution of cooling over the ingot width. The results of numerical experiments are presented. In the periphery-center system, which is in wide global use, the edges of the slab are overcooled in some cases. Accordingly, it is better to organize slab cooling by means of pipes distributed diagonally over the height with sprayers that ensure coverage of the edges. Quantitative characteristics are proposed for the effectiveness of cooling in terms of the formation of precipitates (nitrides and carbonitrides of aluminum and alloying elements) that might weaken the grain boundaries. © 2013 Allerton Press, Inc.
