Attention focuses on improvements in the calculation of the basic roller-groove parameters and the selection of an optimal configuration in converting the strip into pipe. The basic characteristics of pipe-electrowelding systems are presented. The influence of the shaping system and the configuration of the equipment on the energy parameters of pipe rolling is investigated. To reduce the number of driven shaping cells in the mill from 8-10 to four, recommendations are made regarding the grooving system and the mill composition. To this end, shaping along the descending trajectory of the lower generatrix is also recommended. © 2011 Allerton Press, Inc.

Measures to optimize the production of corrosion-resistant steel have been introduced at OAO Severskii Trubnyi Zavod. They ensure that the steel’s content of corrosive nonmetallic inclusions of the first and second type is no more than 2 mm−2. Optimal carburization principles are formulated for the production of pipe steel when using a superpowerful arc furnace. Laboratory and industrial research confirms the significance of combining reduction and carburization, the quality of the material used for carburization, and the time at which the carbon content is corrected. The formation of melts is considered at the structural level on the basis of viscosimetry. The equilibrium and stability of melts in the course of melting, alloying, and microalloying are considered. Data regarding the interrelated properties of liquid and solid metals indicate the possibility of significantly improving the mechanical and corrosion properties of steel on the basis of metallurgical measures that affect the melt structure prior to solidification. Analysis of the mass transfer in the ladle refining of steel with gas mixing is of great importance in order to intensify such processes and improve the overall productivity of steel plants. Traditional analysis of process data does not permit the assessment of current production conditions. In the approach here adopted, the dynamics of steel refining with gas mixing is characterized by a bulk mass-transfer coefficient. On the basis of extensive industrial data for the slag desulfurization of lowand moderate-carbon steel in the ladle–furnace unit and vacuum treatment to remove nitrogen in the VD unit, together with models of the mixing and refining processes, new relations between the rate of gas injection in mixing and the bulk mass-transfer coefficient are derived for open ladle processes and for vacuum degassing. Models of refining based on those formulas prove effective. © 2015, Allerton Press, Inc.
