At nuclear power plants, metal equipment is subjected to temperatures of 290-320°C. That may lead to thermal aging and reduce the resistance to brittle failure. The degradation of the steel's properties may be taken into account in terms of the shift in the critical brittleness temperature. The thermal aging of steel is controlled by the diffusion of carbon and associated with carbide deposition. The results permit prediction of the properties of steel and the shift in the critical brittleness temperature corresponding to a life of 60 years. © 2013 Allerton Press, Inc. Source

The strengthening and change in austenite stability when steel of X18H10 type alloyed by nitrogen are investigated, for applications where corrosion-resistant structural steel must operate satisfactorily at both high and cryogenic temperatures. Alloying by nitrogen may be regarded as a promising means of increasing the strength and stability of austenitic stainless steel. Preliminary cold or hot working increases the likelihood of martensite formation under load and consequently limits the working temperature range of the steel. High-strength nonmagnetic nitrogen steel based on X18AH10 steel with up to 0.22% N may be used for undeformable components at cryogenic temperatures. Without nitrogen, deformational martensite is always formed in such steel at temperatures below −70°C. High strength, plasticity, and ductility may only be ensured in such steel by means of the TRIP effect or reduction in the grain size. Nitrogen effectively strengthens the solid solution in the high-temperature state. The use of combined high-temperature deformation and moderate-temperature deformation permits additional strengthening of the steel during thermomechanical treatment, including strain aging, which is effective where thermostable steel is required. © 2014, Allerton Press, Inc. It is shown that during ultrasonic control of products that are made of materials with a complex structure (cast iron, concrete, and bronze) the use of ultrasonic signals with a wavelength that is comparable to the sizes of the acoustic irregularities in a material induces the combined reflection of an ultrasonic probing signal from structural irregularities, which masks the reflections from the initial defects of the product. The combined reflected signal is correlated with the probing signal; in ultrasonic defectoscopy of products it has to be considered as interference that masks the echo signals from the initial defects of the product. At the same time, it provides information on the structural state of a studied material. In this work we consider the model of a complex material with a random structural irregularity distribution, for which the statistical characteristics of the combined reflected signal, viz., the density of the structural-noise probability, dispersion, and energy spectrum, are determined. We propose a new method for defining the structural state of a complex material by analyzing the statistical characteristics (energy spectrum and dispersion) of the structural noise. The experimental results on the analysis of the statistical characteristics of the structural noise are discussed for cast-iron products, allowing the structural state to be detected and monitored during their operation. © 2015, Pleiades Publishing, Ltd.
