Thermodynamic analysis of the reduction of iron and the material balances of carbon shows that the CO2 levels in the blast-furnace gas may be maintained by lowering the carbon consumption in the direct reduction of iron from its oxides. To this end, natural gas and blast-furnace gas are injected into the furnace or else some of the oxidized sinter and pellets may be replaced by reduced pellets. © 2013 Allerton Press, Inc.

Increase in FeO content lowers the initial melting temperature of primary slags in the blast furnace and prevents the formation of stable surface coatings. That increases the thermal loads on the coolers in the bosh and bosh extension and correspondingly increases the heat losses. The FeO content in the primary slags is determined by the indirect reduction. In the present work, means of reducing the thermal loads on the coolers in the bosh and bosh extension are assessed. Decrease in the gas temperature at the furnace periphery is accompanied by change in the degree of indirect reduction. Hence, the peripheral temperature may be regarded as an indicator of the degree of indirect reduction. A model of the gas temperature and the reducing effect of the gas at the furnace periphery is developed and may be used to optimize the thermal state of the furnace shaft in the peripheral zone. © 2016, Allerton Press, Inc.

The steel is produced to both national and international standards and meets the highest customer requirements. New products and improved technologies are constantly being introduced at OAO NLMK. Information is presented regarding the production of new grades of electrical steel (in particular, transformer steel with laser treatment, transformer steel of thickness 0.23 mm, and highly permeable dynamo steel). The hot strength of coke (CSR) affects blast-furnace efficiency both directly, through the coke’s decrease in piece size within the furnace, and indirectly, through the scope for increasing injected-fuel consumption, the temperature, flow rate, and oxygen content of the blast, and the gas pressure at the charge hole. At OAO Novolipetskii Metallurgicheskii Kombinat, 1% increase in CSR permits 1.1% decrease in coke consumption and 1.2% increase in productivity. With increase in the hot strength, coke’s direct influence on blast-furnace efficiency declines asymptotically. At the same time, there is greater scope for coke conservation and intensification of the blast-furnace processes. © 2014, Allerton Press, Inc.

A mathematical model of the reversible cold rolling of low-plasticity thin strip consisting of high-silicon steel (including high-quality anisotropic electrical steel) has been developed and industrially introduced. The influence of elevated pressure on the reduction processes and gas dynamics in the blast furnace is analyzed. With scope for greater air injection and greater upper and lower pressure differences, increase in gas pressure at the charge hole boosts furnace productivity and reduces the CO consumption in the reduction of iron from wustite, thanks to the briefer batch residence in the isothermal zone. The coke consumption is mainly affected by the decrease in heat losses with increase in productivity. The benefits of increasing the gas pressure at the charge hole are apparent in the operation of blast furnaces at OAO Novolipetskii Metallurgicheskii Kombinat. © 2015, Allerton Press, Inc.
