The stress at the boundary between nonmetallic oxide inclusions and the matrix may be calculated, for different loads, by simulation of the system consisting of the matrix and inclusions. On that basis, the nonmetallic inclusions may be ranked in terms of the risk of contact-fatigue defects. The phase composition and geometry of the nonmetallic inclusions in rail steel are determined by the reduction of the rail steel and are extremely important for high rail performance. © 2011 Allerton Press, Inc. Metallurgical methods of improving the reliability of the weld seam in bulk-quenched electrosteel rail are considered: optimization of the chemical composition in terms of the basic elements and total impurity content; improvement in plastic properties of the rail by reducing the hardness; and removal of nonmetallic inclusions from the steel. Instability is seen in the weldability of the rails and also in the composition, with the same set of mechanical properties. The need for improvement in welding technology is shown; without the elimination of existing problems, the weldability of electrosteel rail cannot be guaranteed. © 2010 Allerton Press, Inc. Source

To meet the demand for wear-resistant grinding balls at OAO Novokuznetskii Metallurgicheskii Kombinat (NKMK), the TT 14788411-93-2009 standard has been developed, and the production of ultrahard (80-100)-mm balls has been introduced. An experimental batch of R50 low-alloy E{cyrillic}78XCΦ steel rails is produced. Alloying with chromium (0. 55%) yields an anomalous combination of strength, plasticity, and impact strength. The microstructure of the metal consists of colonies of fine-grain predominately sorbite-like pearlite. If the content of nonmetallic inclusions in the steel is sufficiently low, this extends the working life of the subway rails. © 2010 Allerton Press, Inc. Source
