The factors affecting the thermal state of mold walls in continuous slab-casting machines are analyzed. A mathematical model permits calculation of the heat losses and temperature variation of liquid steel. The rates of variation in the heat losses and the integral mean temperature of the liquid steel are physically interpreted. A semiempirical formula that performs well in practice is used for the emissivity of slagmetal melt during discharge from a converter. Good agreement is found between the calculated and actual temperature values of the steel in a casting ladle for a continuous-casting machine. © 2011 Allerton Press, Inc.

Physical simulation of steel injection in the intermediate ladle of a continuous slab-casting machine permits the determination of the supply channels for the bottom tuyere such that bubble injection of the metal extends over the whole bath depth in the intermediate ladle and the gas bubbles reliably pass through the slag coating layer. A rational technology is proposed for the deoxidation of low-silicon steel. It includes preliminary deoxidation by ferrosilicomanganese in metal tapping from a steel-melting unit and the introduction of aluminum ingots and aluminum rods during out-of-furnace treatment. As a result, the contamination of rolled roll sheets by nonmetallic inclusions decreases and the metal yield increases. © 2011 Pleiades Publishing, Ltd.

The production of rolled bar and complex profiles from continuous-cast slab is considered. The proposed method includes water-based cooling systems and the introduction of consumable macrocooling units in the melt. This approach significantly reduces the axial segregation of chemical elements and the structural inhomogeneity of the blank, improves the plastic properties and improved strength of the rolled bar, and reduces the metal consumption. © 2010 Allerton Press, Inc.
