Results are obtained by fractography and by local chemical analysis of the internal surfaces of light spots in the fractures of OS axle steel. The light-spot surfaces correspond to laminar facets; this corresponds to brittle transcrystallite fracture. Nonmetallic inclusions are found in the region of the light spots; these are mainly calcium carbide CaC2 and ferrous oxide FeO. The presence of such inclusions in the steel is evidently associated with the entrainment of slag in the metal, on account of the increased content of surfactants-calcium carbide and ferrous oxide-in the discharge slag. © 2010 Allerton Press, Inc. An ultrasound device installed in the wire-drawing line permits the industrial production of welding wire with ultrasonic removal of lubricant residues from the surface, so as to improve wire performance. The influence of the temperature and time of softening thermocyclic annealing on the morphology and size distribution of carbides in high-speed steel is investigated. It is established that hot plasticity is facilitated by globular microstructure, when round carbides are uniformly distributed throughout the ferrite matrix. Thermocyclic treatment of high-speed steel creates a structural state with desirable carbide morphology. For maximum effectiveness, thermocyclic treatment is combined with holding at maximum and minimum temperatures. Research permits the development of thermocyclic treatment of hot-rolled high-speed steel bar in industrial chamber furnaces. © 2010 Allerton Press, Inc. Source
