Sintering with belt cooling has been successfully used in Europe. However, experience with 39 such sintering systems in the Soviet Union was unsatisfactory, mainly because the cooling system was poorly designed. In addition, the batch was sintered in a low bed, without efficient extraction pumps or an effective grating. In this context, valuable experience has been gained in introducing a new sintering plant at OAO ChMK: operating with 80% concentrate, this plant is characterized by a productivity of 1. 18 t/m2, with a bed height of 550-560 mm and fuel consumption of less than 40 kg/t of sinter on sintering machines with belt cooling. © 2011 Allerton Press, Inc.

In rolling shop 1 at OAO ChMK, reconstruction of the pass-through furnaces associated with the 780, 300-2, and 240 bar mills, together with the introduction of automated fuel-consumption meters and other resource-conserving measures, has reduced fuel consumption by 12%, with some decrease in output. Information is presented regarding the structural changes associated with the use of thicker billet. Furnaces of the new design are promising in terms of improvements in performance and energy conservation. © 2010 Allerton Press, Inc.
