The crack formation in steel is investigated. It is found that peritectic transformation occurs during solidification by phase reactions: the formation of primary ferrite from liquid; and the formation of peritectic austenite from this ferrite and the residual liquid. The sections of anomalous structure in the boundary zones between the large dendrites correspond to the former liquational liquid. The low-melting liquid facilitates the nucleation and growth of microcracks, which penetrate to the external layer. Hot insertion of the S355J2 steel blank during the heating prior to rolling may lead to the appearance of cracks on account of temperature stress and structural stress. Warm or cold insertion is recommended, so as to avoid crack formation or development, with corresponding improvement in product acceptance and reduction in waste. © 2012 Allerton Press, Inc. Source
