The operating range and all-weather capability of terahertz (λ = 3 mm) and gigahertz (λ = 9 mm, 3 cm, and 10 cm) radars are estimated for the climatic conditions of weather stations at Dikson, Moscow, Batumi, and Ashkhabad. Based on empirical laws for the distribution of the temperature and relative humidity of the air for various weather stations, a method has been developed for modelling the distribution law of the meteorological-visibility range that makes it possible, combined with algorithms for modelling fogs and precipitations, to estimate the frequency distribution of the visibility of objects at various ranges by television and thermal-vision devices. © 2015 Optical Society of America.
