The usage of Internet and Social Network Sites (SNSs) is an ongoing trend within the 21st century. The present article investigates the existing publications in the research area of older people and SNSs. Due to five exclusion criteria the systematic literature review reveals 27 articles out of 22 online bibliographic databases with overall 660 search operations. Of them, only eight articles concentrate exclusively on people over the age of 50 years and even two articles solely on persons over 60 years. The analysis shows that more than 80 percent of the relevant articles were published between 2009 and 2011. The majority of the articles can be seen as fundamental research. The sample size differs from 17 to nearly 80.000 people. To obtain generalizable results for elderly persons' usage of SNSs, further research is necessary. On the one hand, communication in SNSs provides the potential of reducing isolation and feelings of loneliness. Beyond, data security, privacy or trust could become an obstacle for the usage of SNSs. © 2013 IADIS. Source

The aim of the prospective cohort study was to investigate the outcome of acute whiplash injury first treated either by junior doctors (JD) [≥3 postgraduate years (PGY)] or more experienced doctors (MED) (>3 PGY). At baseline, crash-related data and health parameters including the SF36 were evaluated in whiplash patients (WP), who fulfilled criteria for whiplash-associated disorders grade I-II and presented up to 48 h after motor vehicle accident to our Emergency Department. 81 WP were recruited and treated by either one of 14 JD (35 WP) or one of 22 MED (46 WP). The follow-up examination included the course of pain intensity [numeric rating scale (NRS) 0-10] by the use of a 28 days-pain-diary and the incidence of symptoms (standardized-telephone-interview at 1, 3, and 6 months post trauma) in terms of neck pain NRS > 2, analgesic medication, work-off, and utilization of further medical services as well as SF36 evaluated at the end of the study. Although the entry population seemed similar, all outcome parameters were comparable between the JD- and MED-group (p > 0.05). Therefore, we conclude that seniority of the first-treating physician does not influence the outcome of acute whiplash injury. © 2010 Springer-Verlag. Source

This paper looks at collaboration processes in the context of international seminars that have been organised completely online. The motivation for organising these teaching events has been based on three assumptions: Firstly, international student groups can develop multicultural perspectives on the respective educational topics while working together synchronously and asynchronously, thereby developing intercultural and communicative competences. Secondly, developing and archiving both educational contents and students' artefacts with the help of WIKIs improve the overall educational performance. And thirdly, collaborative teaching activities across institutional and national boundaries create fruitful synergy effects for the teachers. The overall objective was to implement an inspiring and demanding learning context in which holistic and conceptual thinking are supported. Furthermore, it will be explained which competences are necessary for taking over the role as a seminar coordinator. Altogether, the seminars were attended by over one hundred students and lecturers from about 40 different countries. The principal e-learning tools applied were a group-oriented virtual classroom and a WIKI as both allow for a strongly student-centred pedagogical approach. Source

The ecosystem services (ES) concept is one of the main avenues for conveying society's dependence on natural ecosystems. On-ground applications of the concept are now widespread and diverse and include its use as a communication tool, for policy guidance and priority setting, and for designing economic instruments for conservation. Each application raises ethical considerations beyond traditional controversies related to the monetary valuation of nature. We review ethical considerations across major on-ground applications and group them into the following categories: anthropocentric framing, economic metaphor, monetary valuation, commodification, sociocultural impact, changes in motivations, and equity implications. Different applications of the ES concept raise different suites of ethical issues, and we propose methods to address the issues most relevant to each application. We conclude that the ES concept should be considered as only one among various alternative approaches to valuing nature and that reliance on economic metaphors can exclude other motivations for protecting ecosystems. © 2012 by American Institute of Biological Sciences. A major strength of the ecosystem services (ESS) concept is that it allows a succinct description of how human well-being depends on nature, showing that the neglect of such dependencies has negative consequences on human well-being and the economy. As ESS refer to human needs and interests, values are to be considered when dealing with the concept in practice. As a result we argue that in using the concept there is a need to be clear about what different dimensions of value are involved, and be aware of ethical issues that might be associated with the concept. A systematic analysis of the ethical implications associated to the ESS concept is still lacking. We address this deficiency by scrutinising value dimensions associated with the concept, and use this to explore the associated ethical implications. We then highlight how improved transparency in the use of the ESS concept can contribute to using its strengths without succumbing to possible drawbacks arising from ethical problems. These problems concern the dangers that some uses of the concept have in obscuring certain types of value, and in masking unevenness in the distribution of costs and benefits that can arise in the management of ESS. © 2013 Elsevier B.V.
