An RMA crosslinkable composition for making thick coating layers having at least one crosslinkable component comprising reactive components A and B each including at least 2 reactive groups wherein the at least 2 reactive groups of component A are acidic protons (CH) in activated methylene or methine groups, and the at least 2 reactive groups of component B are activated unsaturated groups (CC), to achieve crosslinking by Real Michael Addition reaction, the composition further including a base catalyst (C), an XH group containing component (D) that is also a Michael addition donor reactable with component B under the action of catalyst C, wherein X is C, N, P, O or S and a sag control component (E). A crosslikable composition is also disclosed for preparing thick coating layers having a dry thickness of at least 70 mu having a surface appearance and hardness of the resulting cured composition.

The invention relates to an aqueous coating composition comprising a film-forming first polymer and a second polymer for improving the open time, the wet edge time, adhesion and/or hardness of the resulting coating. The invention further relates to said novel second polymer, its use in coating compositions for improving the open time and coalescence. The water soluble second polymer is an addition polymer comprising 25-95 wt % specific non-ionic hydrophilic monomers A and 5-75 wt % of hydrophobic monomers B which second polymer is sparingly water soluble and a solution of only said second polymer in water has a substantially Newtonian flow behaviour in a wide solid contents range.

The invention relates to a process for the preparation of aqueous vinyl polymer dispersions having good film forming properties, good stability and in can clarity, to the polymer dispersions obtainable by the process and coating compositions prepared from said polymer dispersions and the use thereof, said process comprising a first emulsion polymerisation step of a first monomer mixture, a sulfur based anionic surfactant containing less than 60 wt% ethylene oxide and a salt content at the start of polymerization is between 0.01 and 3 gr/kg water and a second polymerization step of a second monomer mixture wherein carboxylic acid functional monomers is present in an amount such that the acid value of the resulting polymer is less than 23 KOH/g.

A crosslinkable composition including at least one crosslinkable component that is crosslinkable under the action of a base catalyst, a first carbonate salt according to a first formula as latent base crosslinking catalyst, and a second carbonate salt according to a second formula as potlife extender, wherein the second carbonate is present in an amount of at least 5 mole % and preferably at most 500 mole % relative to the molar amount of the first carbonate. The present invention relates to a crosslinkable composition comprising at least one crosslinkable component and a latent base crosslinking catalyst, which crosslinkable composition has a solids content of typically at least 55 wt (dry weight after crosslinking relative to the total weight of the crosslinking composition) wherein the latent base catalyst is a substituted carbonate salt according to formula 1 wherein X^(+) represents a non acidic cation, preferably a quaternary ammonium or phosphonium, and wherein R is hydrogen, alkyl, aryl or aralkyl group. The invention relates in particular to a composition crosslinkable by Real Michael Addition (RMA) reaction wherein a component with at least 2 activated unsaturated groups and a component with at least 2 acidic protons CH in activated methylene or methine groups, preferably malonate react and crosslink to each other in the presence of the base catalyst. The invention further relates to a coating composition comprising the crosslinkable composition according to the invention, a novel catalyst composition and to the use of said catalyst composition according to the invention as a latent base crosslinking catalyst in coating compositions, preferably in RMA crosslinkable compositions.
