Disclosed herein is a method for measuring the contractility of intestinal tissue upon treatment with GLP-2 or a GLP-2 ligand. Also disclosed is an assay which directly measures the activity of GLP-2 or GLP-2 ligands ex vivo and permits the screening of putative GLP-2 ligands in native tissue.

Intestinal absorption is enhanced in short bowel syndrome patients presenting with colon-in-continuity by treatment with a GLP-2 receptor agonist, such as teduglutide.

Methods are provided for treatment or prophylaxis of liver or kidney dysfunction in individuals experiencing one or more of intestinal failure, short bowel syndrome or parenteral nutrition by the administration of GLP-2 or GLP-2 analogs.
