Systems and methods for using full-width hot sprays to pre-heat rolling mills prior to processing of metal sheet or plate are described herein. The hot sprays may be individually controlled. Using hot sprays can allow the rolling mill to reach operating temperature and achieve a desired thermal crown so that metal sheet or plate may be processed immediately within tolerances for flatness and gauge accuracy. Pre-heating of rolling mills can eliminate the need of the rolling mill to operate in a transitional period of work roll heating and can increase efficiency by eliminating or reducing scrap material and mill downtime. Hot sprays may also be incorporated with existing coolant systems to provide thermal control systems for rolling mills with bi-directional temperature controls.

An exemplary embodiment of the invention provides an apparatus for casting a composite metal ingot. The apparatus comprises a direct chill casting apparatus having a casting mold with at least two chambers for casting a composite ingot, troughs for supplying streams of molten metal to said at least two casting chambers, at least one temperature sensor for monitoring inlet temperatures of one or more of said streams of molten metal at positions adjacent to inlets of the casting chambers fed with said streams, a device for comparing said monitored temperatures from said at least one temperature sensor with predetermined set temperatures for said one or more streams to detect temperature differences for said streams, and a controller for adjusting a casting variable that affects molten metal temperatures entering or within the casting chambers by an amount based on a temperature difference detected for at least one of said streams.

A method for dynamically measuring thermal expansion is disclosed. The method comprises measuring a first propagation time of a first mechanical wave through a roll 102 at a first temperature, measuring a second propagation time of a second mechanical wave through the roll 102 at a second temperature, and calculating a parameter of the roll by comparing the first propagation time to the second propagation time, wherein the parameter of the roll is selected from the group consisting of an average temperature of the roll at the second temperature and a change in diameter of the roll between the first temperature and the second temperature.

A high speed manufacturing process for large format aluminum bottles (up to 750 ml) based on the DWI process that uses 3xxx can body stock with high recycled content. The process can include forming a bottle preform by redrawing, drawing and ironing, and doming a cup. The bottle preform formed by the process has a diameter of about 2.5 to about 3.0, a height of about 10.0 to about 12.5, a wall thickness of about 0.006 to about 0.020, and a dome depth of between about 0.400 to about 1.00.

In a first aspect, the invention provides aluminum alloy comprising the following composition, all values in weight %: Si 0.25-1.5 Cu 0.3-1.5 Fe up to 0.5 Mn up to 0.1 all other elements including Mg being incidental and present (if at all) then in an amount less than or equal to 0.05 individually, and less than or equal to 0.15 in aggregate, the balance being aluminum. In a third aspect, the invention provides a method of making a joined structure of a steel component and an aluminum component made from the alloy and/or the sheet product of the invention.


Disclosed are improved water-based, polyamide-containing synthetic polymer coating compositions and related products and processes. The coating composition comprises 1 to 40% dry weight of polyamide powder, and can contain higher polyamide content than organic solvent-based coating products containing polyamide and polyurethane. The improved coating compositions are suitable for coating of metal substrates, such as aluminum sheets and panels. The improved coating compositions are also suitable for industrial coil coating processes, forming a thin and uniform coating layer when applied to a metal substrate, such as an aluminum sheet surface. Methods and processes related to production and uses of the coating compositions are described, as well as products produced by the processes using the coating compositions, such as roller shutters and architectural panels.


System and method for using fast response heaters to pre-heat metal before entering a metal treatment furnace, which may improve control over metal processing, especially in response to changes in material, mass flow rate, line speed, and/or desired treatment process. Fast response heaters may be used with control systems to adjust the output of the fast response heater based on operator inputs, direct or indirect sensing of process parameters, and/or the use of thermal models to quickly adjust fast response heater output while a metal treatment furnace remains at a constant temperature or slowly transitions into a new operating state. The resulting gains in process control result in higher quality products, reduced scrap, and increases in line speed and output.

A system for forming a score in a material includes an aluminum can and a tool. The aluminum can includes a can end, and an interior of the can end includes a coating. The tool includes a tool holder and a scoring knife. The scoring knife includes a proximal end configured to form the score in the can end. The proximal end has a width configured to minimize feathering of the coating when the score is punctured.
