An exemplary embodiment of the invention provides an apparatus for casting a composite metal ingot. The apparatus comprises a direct chill casting apparatus having a casting mold with at least two chambers for casting a composite ingot, troughs for supplying streams of molten metal to said at least two casting chambers, at least one temperature sensor for monitoring inlet temperatures of one or more of said streams of molten metal at positions adjacent to inlets of the casting chambers fed with said streams, a device for comparing said monitored temperatures from said at least one temperature sensor with predetermined set temperatures for said one or more streams to detect temperature differences for said streams, and a controller for adjusting a casting variable that affects molten metal temperatures entering or within the casting chambers by an amount based on a temperature difference detected for at least one of said streams.

A method for dynamically measuring thermal expansion is disclosed. The method comprises measuring a first propagation time of a first mechanical wave through a roll 102 at a first temperature, measuring a second propagation time of a second mechanical wave through the roll 102 at a second temperature, and calculating a parameter of the roll by comparing the first propagation time to the second propagation time, wherein the parameter of the roll is selected from the group consisting of an average temperature of the roll at the second temperature and a change in diameter of the roll between the first temperature and the second temperature.

An edge protection bushing 106 with integrated clamp 208 is disclosed. The bushing 106 includes a tail end 202 for attachment to a heat protection tube and a head end 206 for accepting a cable protection hose. A clamp 208 is positioned adjacent the head end 206 and held in place by one or more breakable tabs 214 designed to break when pressure is applied to push the clamp 208 towards the head end 206. As the clamp 208 is pressed towards the head end 206, a locking mechanism 210, 212 secures the clamp 208 in place to secure the cable protection hose between the clamp 208 and the head end 206.

Control of third octave vibrations in a mill stand 102, 104 can be achieved using a high-speed piezoelectric assist 132, 148 coupled to a hydraulic gap cylinder 126, 146 to increase the damping of the roll stack. Vertical movements of the roll stack (e.g., the top work roll 118, 134) can be determined through observation (e.g., measurement) of hydraulic fluid pressure of the hydraulic cylinder or entry tension of the metal strip 108. After determining vertical movements of the roll stack, a desired change in hydraulic pressure can be determined to overcome, reduce, or prevent third octave vibration. This desired change in hydraulic pressure can be effectuated at high speeds (e.g., at or above approximately 90 hertz) using the piezoelectric assist 132, 148.

A rolling mill (100) with oil-cooled top and bottom work rolls (102, 104) at the entry side (124) and a water spray header (130) at the exit side (126) of the bottom work roll (104). Water cooling is used below the pass line (128), reducing the heat in the mill (100) substantially without the risk of generating drip-related surface defects during rolling. Water cooling can be used on the bottom work roll (104) and a portion of the oil no longer needed to cool the bottom work (104) roll can be diverted to the top work roll (102). In some cases, the coolant portion of the flatness control can be operated solely through water-cooling the bottom roll (104).

Control of self-excited third octave vibration in a metal rolling mill can be achieved by adjusting the tension of the metal strip as it enters a stand 102. Self-excited third octave vibration can be detected and/or measured by one or more sensors. A high-speed tension adjustor 144 can rapidly adjust the entry tension of the metal strip (e.g., as the metal strip enters a mill stand) to compensate for the detected self-excited third octave vibration. High-speed tension adjustors can include any combination of hydraulic or piezoelectric actuators coupled to the center roll of a bridle roll to rapidly raise or lower the roll and thus induce rapid tension adjustments in the strip. Other high-speed tension adjustors can be used.

Systems and methods are disclosed for using magnetic fields (e.g., changing magnetic fields) to control metal flow conditions during casting (e.g., casting of an ingot, billet, or slab). The magnetic fields can be introduced using rotating permanent magnets or electromagnets. The magnetic fields can be used to induce movement of the molten metal in a desired direction, such as in a rotating pattern around the surface of the molten sump. The magnetic fields can be used to induce metal flow conditions in the molten sump to increase homogeneity in the molten sump and resultant ingot.

A high organic concurrent decoating kiln includes a low-oxygen zone and a high-oxygen zone. The disclosed kiln allows a gas low in free oxygen to be used in the initial stages of decoating, while a gas higher in free oxygen can be used in the final stages. The total amount of free oxygen used throughout the kiln, in particular at the upstream portion of the kiln, is kept low. Exhaust gas can be recirculated for use in a burner-fired chamber that provides the initial low-oxygen gas to the kiln.

Techniques are disclosed for reducing macrosegregation in cast metals. Techniques include providing an eductor nozzle capable of increasing mixing in the fluid region of an ingot being cast. Techniques also include providing a non-contacting flow control device to mix and/or apply pressure to the molten metal that is being introduced to the mold cavity. The non-contacting flow control device can be permanent magnet or electromagnet based. Techniques additionally can include actively cooling and mixing the molten metal before introducing the molten metal to the mold cavity.

An aluminum alloy fin stock material comprising about 0.9-1.2 wt. % Si, 0.3-0.5 wt. % Fe, 0.20-0.40 wt. % Cu, 1.0-1.5 wt. % Mn, 0-0.1% Mg and 0.0-3.0% Zn, with remainder Al and impurities at 0.15 wt. %. The aluminum alloy fin stock material is produced in a form of a sheet by a process comprising the steps of direct chill casting an ingot, hot rolling the ingot after the direct chill casting, cold rolling the aluminum alloy to an intermediate thickness, inter-annealing the aluminum alloy cold rolled to an intermediate thickness at a temperature between 200 and 400C, and cold rolling the material after inter-annealing to achieve % cold work (%CW) of 20 to 40%. The aluminum alloy fin stock material possesses an improved combination of one or more of pre- and/or post-brazes strength, conductivity, sag resistance and corrosion potential. It is useful for fabrication of heat exchanger fins.
