Systems and methods for using full-width hot sprays to pre-heat rolling mills prior to processing of metal sheet or plate are described herein. The hot sprays may be individually controlled. Using hot sprays can allow the rolling mill to reach operating temperature and achieve a desired thermal crown so that metal sheet or plate may be processed immediately within tolerances for flatness and gauge accuracy. Pre-heating of rolling mills can eliminate the need of the rolling mill to operate in a transitional period of work roll heating and can increase efficiency by eliminating or reducing scrap material and mill downtime. Hot sprays may also be incorporated with existing coolant systems to provide thermal control systems for rolling mills with bi-directional temperature controls.

An exemplary embodiment of the invention provides an apparatus for casting a composite metal ingot. The apparatus comprises a direct chill casting apparatus having a casting mold with at least two chambers for casting a composite ingot, troughs for supplying streams of molten metal to said at least two casting chambers, at least one temperature sensor for monitoring inlet temperatures of one or more of said streams of molten metal at positions adjacent to inlets of the casting chambers fed with said streams, a device for comparing said monitored temperatures from said at least one temperature sensor with predetermined set temperatures for said one or more streams to detect temperature differences for said streams, and a controller for adjusting a casting variable that affects molten metal temperatures entering or within the casting chambers by an amount based on a temperature difference detected for at least one of said streams.

A method for dynamically measuring thermal expansion is disclosed. The method comprises measuring a first propagation time of a first mechanical wave through a roll 102 at a first temperature, measuring a second propagation time of a second mechanical wave through the roll 102 at a second temperature, and calculating a parameter of the roll by comparing the first propagation time to the second propagation time, wherein the parameter of the roll is selected from the group consisting of an average temperature of the roll at the second temperature and a change in diameter of the roll between the first temperature and the second temperature.

A textured work roll can impart a desired texture on a metal substrate, such as an aluminum or aluminum alloy sheet. The textured work roll can be used for applying a gloss finish on the metal substrate. The textured work roll can be textured by grinding the work roll to form a ground work roll; electro-discharge texturing the work roll to form an electro-discharge textured work roll; and polishing the work roll to form a polished work roll. The polished work can have an Ra value between 0.30 m and 0.70 m. The polished work roll can be used to apply the gloss finish on the metal substrate.


Bottles with inwardly curled upper portions at the bottle opening and methods and tooling for producing such bottles. The inwardly curled upper portions impart compressive stresses into the bottle material and can reduce a likelihood of material splitting because the upper portion may not be stretched to a larger outer diameter as with outwardly curled upper portions. The inwardly curled upper portions may be formed using rollers with an entry radius positioned near an outside diameter of the bottle opening. The inward curl is formed as the bottle material enters the rollers near an entry face of the rollers, transitions through a work face of the rollers, and exits the roller at an exit face of the rollers. The resulting inward curl meets the edge of the bottle material near the inner surface of the bottle.


Provided are new high strength 6xxx aluminum alloys and methods of making aluminum sheets thereof. These aluminum sheets may be used to fabricate components which may replace steel in a variety of applications including the transportation industry. In some examples, the disclosed high strength 6xxx alloys can replace high strength steels with aluminum. In one example, steels having a yield strength below 340 MPa may be replaced with the disclosed 6xxx aluminum alloys without the need for major design modifications.


Disclosed are high-strength aluminum alloys and methods of making and processing such alloys. More particularly, disclosed is a 6XXX series aluminum alloy exhibiting improved mechanical strength, formability, corrosion resistance, and anodized qualities. An aluminum alloy fin stock material comprising about 0.9-1.2 wt. % Si, 0.3-0.5 wt. % Fe, 0.20-0.40 wt. % Cu, 1.0-1.5 wt. % Mn, 0-0.1% Mg and 0.0-3.0% Zn, with remainder Al and impurities at 0.15 wt. %. The aluminum alloy fin stock material is produced in a form of a sheet by a process comprising the steps of direct chill casting an ingot, hot rolling the ingot after the direct chill casting, cold rolling the aluminum alloy to an intermediate thickness, inter-annealing the aluminum alloy cold rolled to an intermediate thickness at a temperature between 200 and 400C, and cold rolling the material after inter-annealing to achieve % cold work (%CW) of 20 to 40%. The aluminum alloy fin stock material possesses an improved combination of one or more of pre- and/or post-brazes strength, conductivity, sag resistance and corrosion potential. It is useful for fabrication of heat exchanger fins.


A curvilinear metal transfer device with support and compression assemblies that help maintain a constant force on the transfer devices metal outer casing and refractory as the outer casing and refractory expand and contract due to temperature fluctuations. In one embodiment, the support assemblies are configured to apply force to the refractory to keep the refractory in tension with the outer casing to suspend the refractory relative the outer casing. Also disclosed are clamp plates that help hold the refractory in place, and nested lids that cover the curvilinear metal transfer device.
