Intelligent Systems and Decision Making for Risk Analysis and Crisis Response - Proceedings of the 4th International Conference on Risk Analysis and Crisis Response, RACR 2013 | Year: 2013

The growth in global supply chains presents both opportunities and challenges to decision-makers. With an increased reliance on interconnected and interdependent supplier networks, so to increases the vulnerability in firms from any disruptions in the continuity of operations. This paper extends previous supply-side disruption risk research and presents a method and framework developed for analyzing supply chain networks that considers both fiscal and operating impacts on supply chain performance. The purpose of this applied research was in providing a means for firms to identify their economic exposure from risk (using a Monte Carlo simulation) in order to be able to make informed decisions in devising their risk management and mitigation strategies. © 2013 Taylor & Francis Group.

Transjugular intrahepatic portosystemic shunt (TIPS) is a difficult procedure to perform and accessing the portal vein is a very challenging step. There are three broad categories of image guided TIPS creation techniques. Each technique has its advantages and disadvantages. TIPS procedure carries some risk of complications regardless of the guidance technique employed. The technology for TIPS has evolved in parallel with the expanding indications for TIPS. Ultrasound guidance technique offers a safe option, particularly for patients with challenging anatomy. Patient safety should always come first and the US guided technique should be more routinely used. Experience is the main factor in the success of TIPS. Other factors to consider in reducing the all-cause morbidity and mortality are patient selection, patient management and the clinical setting. © Annals of Translational Medicine.

Myanmar (Burma) is a developing country in South East Asia. While Myanmar is among the 20 countries where 80% of the world's malnourished children live, its military consumes the majority of the national budget. Children who are malnourished between conception and age two are at high risk for impaired physical and mental development, which adversely affects the country's productivity and growth. Myanmar is facing three major micronutrient deficiencies which are iodine, iron and vitamin A deficiencies. The three micronutrient deficiencies can cost about 2.4% of the country's GDP. Children are the future of Myanmar and persistent micronutrient deficiencies will hamper its economic growth and lower its GDP. © 2016 Elsevier Inc.

To re-examine the correlation between mtDNA variability and longevity, we examined mtDNAs from samples obtained from over 2200 ultranonagenarians (and an equal number of controls) collected within the framework of the GEHA EU project. The samples were categorized by high-resolution classification, while about 1300 mtDNA molecules (650 ultranonagenarians and an equal number of controls) were completely sequenced. Sequences, unlike standard haplogroup analysis, made possible to evaluate for the first time the cumulative effects of specific, concomitant mtDNA mutations, including those that per se have a low, or very low, impact. In particular, the analysis of the mutations occurring in different OXPHOS complex showed a complex scenario with a different mutation burden in 90+ subjects with respect to controls. These findings suggested that mutations in subunits of the OXPHOS complex I had a beneficial effect on longevity, while the simultaneous presence of mutations in complex I and III (which also occurs in J subhaplogroups involved in LHON) and in complex I and V seemed to be detrimental, likely explaining previous contradictory results. On the whole, our study, which goes beyond haplogroup analysis, suggests that mitochondrial DNA variation does affect human longevity, but its effect is heavily influenced by the interaction between mutations concomitantly occurring on different mtDNA genes. © 2013 The Authors. The paper focuses on technology use in therapeutic settings, particularly in the field of art therapy. Art therapy uses visual arts materials to address therapeutic issues and assessment. Technology now provides numerous art-based alternatives to traditional art materials. This study compared two forms of the Arrington Visual Preference Test (AVPT)-the original AVPT and the newly developed digital AVPT. The study gathered comprehensive survey data by comparing participants' user experiences with the original and digital AVPT. Participants took both the original AVPT and the digital AVPT in random order. Following completion of the AVPT sessions participants completed a survey regarding their experience. Surprisingly younger participants (21-30 years old) stated preference for the original AVPT and older participants (over 40 years of age) preferred the digital AVPT. However, Asians under 30 years old showed a strong preference for the digital AVPT compared to other ethnic groups. The digital AVPT presented via the Internet could be easily converted into different languages making it available at domestic and international locations. Norms could be generated from a large pool of participants in various locations, cultures, and spoken languages. This could clarify cultural variations in response to the AVPT increasing its validity and reliability in clinical settings. © Common Ground, Saeid Haghighi, Zohreh Attarabbasi, Mehdi Damaliamiri, All Rights Reserved.
