Filling process of 12 t steel ingots with different riser height was simulated by a software to predict the distribution of shrinkage cavity. The results show that shrinkage cavity in the precedent ingots is much deeper, which is well agreement with validation experiments. Therefore, the riser height was optimized by solidification simulation and validated by experiments. The results indicate that the optimized riser height can eliminate the shrinkage cavity, and enhance the steel ingots quality and utilization.
