A slight crosslinking copolymer gas channeling agent is synthesized with AMPS, AM and N, N'-dimethylacrylamide as the main monomers and N, N'-methylene-bisacrylamide as the crosslinking agent. The gas channeling agent is characterized with IR spectroscopy and Thermogravimetricanalyzer, and its performance in cement slurry is studied. The study shows that this copolymer gas channeling agent has good filtration control capacity; filtration of about 50 mL is obtained at a copolymer concentration of only 0.5%. The copolymer has the ability to thicken cement slurry and cement slurry treated with the copolymer has a thixotropic property. Cementing slurry treated with the copolymer has short thickening time and gel strength testing time, which can be controlled within 10-20 min, and has good gas channeling control performance. No gas channeling is found in laboratory test under 2.1 MPa.

Low formation temperature, low fracturing pressure and long thickening time of cement slurry have resulted in difficulties in cementing the surface section of the hole such as channeling in annulus and loss of cement slurry, leading to high operation cost. A new light weight agent, S1, is developed based on the fractal theory of particle sizing, to mix a cement slurry of 1.4 g/cm 3 with other cement additives. This slurry has fast developed early strength, 24-hour compressive strength being greater than 10 MPa at 30 °C, thickening time of less than 60 min, API filtration rate of less than 60 mL, and free water of zero. This slurry is stable and is easy to mix, satisfying the cementing requirement in Bohai area.

Well Gangshen 15-18, one of the key exploratory wells drilled in Block Madong, is a deep well having a total depth of 4,405 m. The 139.7 mm liner penetrated formations that have many problems such as high temperature, active oil and gas, oil/gas/ water channeling, long cementing section and lost circulation, presenting rigorous requirement to cementing slurry as to the anti-gas-channeling property. To solve these problems, latex content in the cementing slurry is increased to 8%. Laboratory study and field application show that this high latex content cement has good rheology, low filtration rate, superior anti-gas-channeling property, and fast strength development of the top cement slurry. Combined with weighted spacers and cementing technology, this cementing slurry successfully solves the bad cementing job quality problem of the 139.7 mm hole section of the well Gangshen 15-18.
