Objective. To explore the serum markers associated with ischemic cerebral vascular disease (ICVD) and discuss their diagnostic value. Methods. Two hundred and eighty-eight patients with ICVD and one hundred and eighty healthy persons were enrolled as the case group and the control group, respectively. This paper then carried out the univariate and multivariate logistic regression analyses of their respective levels of serum markers, made combined analysis of related factors, and detected the diagnostic value. Results. Meta-analysis results showed that for ICVD patients the levels of CRP, S-100, TNF-α, HCY, NSE, and IL-6 were higher than those of the healthy persons, while the level of HDL was obviously lower than that of the healthy persons. The multivariate regression analysis indicated that the association between the level of HDL and TNF-α and the occurrence of ICVD was statistically significant (P < 0.05). The area under the curves (AUC) of receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve of HDL and TNF-α was 0.916, with sensitivity of 90.91% and specificity of 76.47%. Conclusion. HDL has negative correlation with the occurrence of ICVD, while TNF-α was positively correlated with it. The combination test of HDL and TNF-α could raise the accuracy of ICVD diagnosis. © 2015 Laibin Dong et al.

AIM: To detect the expression of Raf kinase inhibitory protein (RKIP) in gastric cancer (GC), to analyze the relationship between RKIP expression and clinicopathological characteristics of GC, and to explore the role of RKIP in invasion of GC cells. METHODS: The expression levels of RKIP mRNA in 74 gastric cancer tissues and the corresponding tumor-adjacent gastric tissues were detected by reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR). The relationship between RKIP mRNA expression and clinicopathological characteristics of GC was analyzed. Western blot was used to detect the expression level of RKIP protein. In addition, SGC-7901 cells were stably transfected with plasmids that expressed either sense or antisense RKIP cDNA, with the cells transfected with the empty plasmid as a negative control. The effect of transfection was detected by Western blot. Cell adhesion and invasion assays were used to analyze the effect of RKIP expression on cell invasion in vitro. RESULTS: The expression level of RKIP mRNA in GC tissues was significantly lower than that in adjacent gastric tissues (0.12 ± 0.02 vs 0.48 ± 0.04, t = 6.562, P < 0.01). The expression of RKIP mRNA was significantly associated with histologic differentiation, TNM stage, and lymph node metastasis (all P < 0.05). RKIP protein expression in cancer tissues was significantly lower than that in adjacent gastric tissues (0.08 ± 0.02 vs 0.41 ± 0.04, t = 7.068, P < 0.01). Up-regulated RKIP in SGC-7901 cells could decrease cell invasion, whereas down-regulated RKIP increased cell invasion. CONCLUSION: Low expression of RKIP in gastric carcinoma is closely related to tumor malignancy and invasiveness, suggesting that RKIP may be a potential therapeutic target for the prevention of metastasis in GC patients. © 2013 Baishideng Publishing Group Co., Limited.
